Description

Develop, coordinate, and implement legislative priorities to protect and advance business interests. Provide analysis and background information to develop, recommend, and advance company and tribal legislative positions by influencing change to existing laws and regulations or lobbying for new ones. 



Responsibilities
  • Research and analyzes legal and regulatory issues.
  • Identifies federal, state and local legislative and regulatory issues; prioritizes based on impact to Cherokee Nation Businesses (CNB) and Cherokee Nation.
  • Oversees and manages communications with elected officials, executives, Cherokee Nation, and employees.
  • Writes memoranda, comments, speeches, letters and educational materials for public distribution and legislative drafting.
  • Attends and represents CNB in legislative, governmental, tribal, community, and coalition meetings on issues of importance. 
  • Interprets new and emerging legislative issues; provides direction on strategies for resolution.
  • Oversees and manages strategies which create a positive public and politically involved environment.
  • Builds coalitions of like-minded groups to enhance political strategies.
  • Provides political strategy ideas and advice to leadership.
  • Develops short- and long-range strategic planning which will positively impact the company and tribe.
  • Manages multiple projects without having direct supervisory responsibility; may lead and/or guide the work of other employees.
  • Work is primarily performed in a climate-controlled office setting.
  • Work requires travel, including overnight stays.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.


Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in government relations, or other related field, and ten plus (10+) years of government relations and/or public policy experience at the tribal, state, and/or federal level, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Management experience preferred which includes experience coordinating the work of lobbyists and other government relations professionals.
  • Knowledge of business and management principles involved in planning, resource allocation, production methods and coordination of people and resources.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
  • Working knowledge of state and federal ethics rules related to political contributions.
  • Excellent written communication, presentation and computer skills.
  • Ability to identify alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
  • Ability to foster relationships with elected officials, chambers, government entities, and other partners.
