Sr. Mechanic Welder Fitter

Uses acetylene, electric arc, and other welding tools and equipment to fuse metal. Lays out, fabricates, and repairs metal components of machinery and equipment. Lays out, assembles, installs, and maintains pipe systems, pipe supports, and related components of plumbing, heating, drainage, water, air, and steam systems. 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

• Lays out, cuts, and fits materials for welding. Uses welding equipment to join, burn, and cut through metal pieces.
• Tack-welds or welds components and assemblies using electric, gas, arc, or other welding equipment.
• Cuts work pieces using powered saws, hand shears, and chipping knives. Installs or repairs equipment, such as steel pipes, valves, floor structures, tank vessels and tank linings.
• Inspects grooves, angles, or gap allowances, using micrometer, caliper, and precision measuring instruments. Removes rough spots from work pieces using portable grinders, hand files, and scrapers.
• Heats forms and dresses metal parts using hand tools, torches, and arc welding equipment. Ignites torches and adjusts valves, amperage, or voltage to obtain desired flame or arc.
• Reviews drawings and specifications to plan and layout welding operations. Determines required equipment and welding methods, applying knowledge of metallurgy, geometry, and welding techniques.
• Observes tests on welded surfaces, such as hydrostatic, x-ray, and dimension tolerance to evaluate weld quality and conformance to specifications.

• Examines materials to be repaired to determine the strength and heating properties of parent metals and alloys.

• Maintains an inventory of materials, tools, and equipment. Operates a motor vehicle to travel to worksites throughout the county.

• Communicates appropriately and frequently with faculty, school administrators, supervisor/manager(s) and other employees.

• Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, Training and Experience:

• Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent.
• Four years’ experience performing journeyman welding and fitting duties.
• Possession of a Journey Iron Worker Card or equivalent.

Note: Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience that provide the knowledge and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.

Licenses and Certificates:

• Possession of a valid class C Maryland driver's license or an equivalent.
• Possession of a valid professional certification related to welding.
• Possession of a valid 6G pipe welding certification.

For some positions, possession of a valid commercial, class A Maryland driver's license or an equivalent is required within the probationary period. (The class A license may require endorsements and/or the absence of certain restrictions.)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Knowledge of the principles and practices of welding and pipe fitting. Knowledge of the tools, equipment, and materials used in welding and pipe fitting. Knowledge of plumbing codes. Knowledge of safety standards and procedures.

• Skill in using various welding tools, equipment, and materials. Skill in fabricating and repairing metal components of machinery and equipment. Skill in fitting, installing, and maintaining pipe systems. Skill in reading and interpreting codes, plans, and drawings.

• Ability to lead and instruct others. Ability to communicate effectively.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

• The work of this class entails heavy physical labor including frequent walking, standing, kneeling, reaching, bending, digging, lifting, and carrying objects of moderate to heavy weight, ascending/descending ladders, scaffolds, stairs and the use of tools and equipment. 
• Works in confined spaces in proximity to loud machinery, frequently requires accessing and positioning oneself to reach limited access spaces including but not limited to crawl spaces, roofs, trenches, pits, manholes, attics, and tunnels.
• Recognizes exposure to live circuits and/or operating machinery in adverse weather conditions and travel to sites throughout Baltimore County.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Persons appointed to this classification are designated as Essential Personnel and are required to work when schools and/or offices are closed during adverse weather conditions or any other emergency. 

• In addition to working the assigned work schedule, persons appointed to this class work scheduled overtime and must be available for emergency overtime when the need arises by responding to overtime calls before and after standard scheduled hours of work. 

• Persons appointed to this class may be requested to work an alternative schedule or shift temporarily as designated by supervisor.

• Persons appointed to this class are designated as essential personnel and as such may be required to work during emergency events.

• License to drive in the State of Maryland and the ability to drive a pickup truck or van is required. 

• License(s) if/when required for this position are subject to verification and must be maintained in good and active standing during the duration of employment without lapse. Lapse or void in valid/active licensure may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination.

• Some positions in this class must be physically qualified to drive a commercial motor vehicle in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations and must remain physically qualified to operate such vehicles throughout their employment. Persons holding a commercial driver’s license (CDL) are subject to alcohol and drug testing in accordance with applicable state and federal regulations and Board of Education policy.

SALARY:

OTHER COMPENSATION:
