Summary

The Sr Tool Designer develops design concepts and detailed layouts for complex special design tooling and equipment required for product manufacturing and acceptance.  Performs project management activities and offers innovative solutions to significant CAD, manufacturing, and process problems.  Supports and assists management with organizational initiatives and objectives.  Serves as direct customer interface in the provision or designs, concepts, cost/delivery estimates, and other services required outside the KCNSC. 


Duties and Responsibilities


  • Conceptualizes and designs product manufacturing tools, gages, and special machines. 

  • Provides engineering consultation on manufacturing processes, possible tooling and gaging requirements, and cost/delivery analysis.   

  • Reviews gage and tool designs for compatibility with product design.   

  • Provides recommendations of product changes to reduce tooling cost and delivery time of product. 

  • Uses computerized design and computer aided engineering tools to perform job requirements.  Also develops and implements enhancements to existing CAD/CAE/CAM tools resulting in improved productivity, cycle time, and cost. 

  • Represents organization as direct interface with Design Agency, NWC production sites, customers, and suppliers to assist in tool design related issues and new business solicitation. 

  • Guides the efforts of other Tool Designers. 


You Must Have


  • High School Diploma

  • 5 or more years of Tool Designer experience

  • Ability to travel  up to 5% if the time

  • United States Citizenship

  • Ability to work on-site as directed by management and as determined by the needs of the business

  • Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function of this job

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance (some positions require additional DOE designations)

We Value


  • Experience in design drafting or equivalent experience using CAD computer systems. 

  • Toolmaker or Machinist background.

  • Prior experience working with Vendors. 

  • Manufacturing and project management experience.

  • Formal training in tool design equivalent to Industrial Technology curriculum, completion of Tool and Die Apprenticeship, or equivalent practical experience.   

  • Demonstrates knowledge of some manufacturing processes and fabrication techniques and manufacturing processes.  

  • Demonstrates departmental and project leadership.   

  • This position is not a family promotion position and requires director/management approval.
