Summerville Communications, owner of the Summerville Journal Scene and the Berkeley Independent, seeks a versatile reporter within our editorial team. In this role, you will be responsible for writing, photographing and editing content covering athletics of Berkeley and Dorchester counties, as well as news and features. The ideal candidate will also grow our audience through high-quality and consistent digital and social media engagement.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Researches stories using personal contacts, databases and/or the beb; finds the most relevant sources for information; develops a list of knowledgeable, diverse sources.

• Produces story ideas from the assigned beat or from conversations with sources and other members of the community. Brings real people into stories.
• Writes stories that are clear and concise, using words, sentence construction and organizational format that aid clarity. Complements stories with points of entry and supporting documents.
• Consistently produces sophisticated stories and story ideas from conversations with co-workers, sources and other members of the community.
• Writes stories that provide sufficient context and use multiple sources.
• Provides timely information to graphic artists and presentation editors.
• Attend public evens hosted by Summerville Communications.
• Represent Summerville Communications at community events and/or networking opportunities as needed.

• Perform other duties as requested by management.

Requirements, minimum education level, and experience:

• Four year college degree.

• 1-2 years of reporting experience

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Develops and maintains a story planning document based on input from editor and creation of ideas from research.
• Must be able to multi-task.
• Must have solid news judgement.

• High ethical standards
• Dependable transportation and a valid South Carolina driver's license and proof of insurance.
• Solid understanding of editorial style and guidelines (AP Style).
• Photography experience a plus
• Strong organizational and time management skills, with attention to detail.
• Ability to multi-task and work in a faced paced environment under the pressure of strict deadlines.
• Strong and persuasive verbal and writing communication skills.

Physical Requirement: Work will be both in an office environment and also will include time in the field, possibility of working in times of hot, cold and inclement weather
