Job Description - Supervisor, Equipment Maintenance

Summary:

The Senior Supervisor, Production Line Maintenance leads a 10–15-person team within a 25‑technician department and provides day‑to‑day oversight of maintenance activities across the entire team to deliver safe, 24/7 equipment performance for high‑volume manufacturing lines. You will own short‑ and mid‑range maintenance planning for Security Products, ensure rapid restoration and robust PM/PdM execution, manage labor and spares budgets, and drive continuous improvement to reduce MTTR, extend MTBF, and protect product quality. You will partner closely with Production, Engineering, and Quality and apply RCM/FMEA, and TPM/Lean methods in a high‑tech environment. This role reports to the Manager, Production Line Maintenance.

Duties & Responsibilities:

What You’ll Do

  • Lead a high‑performing team (10–15 direct reports): hire, onboard, coach, set objectives, manage performance, build bench strength, and coordinate contractor support across shifts.
  • Own Security Products planning: build and execute the weekly/bi‑weekly plan for PM/PdM, corrective work, and improvements on Security Products equipment; coordinate windows with Production and Engineering; maintain backlog health in the CMMS.
  • Deliver uptime & fast restoration: prioritize work by safety/urgency/materials; lead on shift responses to failures; ensure quick, proper restoration and robust hand‑offs that minimize impact to output.
  • Run PMs that matter: ensure proactive maintenance (PM, PdM, failure finding, calibration‑as‑assigned) is completed to standard and on schedule; track compliance and effectiveness.
  • Manage costs & spares: own labor/overtime planning and parts usage; keep the shop, parts storage, tools, and documentation clean, organized, and audit‑ready.
  • Enable safe, compliant work: enforce EHS/LOTO/PPE and permit‑to‑work requirements; complete audits, investigate near misses, and close actions.
  • Support capital & change: participate in new equipment selection/commissioning with an eye to safety, availability, reliability, maintainability, and long‑term service cost.
  • Report on what matters: publish maintenance KPIs (availability, MTBF/MTTR, PM compliance, maintenance cost) and drive improvements to target.
  • Maintain department awareness: remain knowledgeable about all production lines and shared utilities to provide backup planning/coverage as needed.

How You Work

  • Safety first. Always: model stop‑work authority; ensure LOTO, PPE, permits, and area controls are never optional.
  • Clear communication: run effective shift startups and turnovers; keep CMMS histories, logs, procedures, and job plans accurate and current.
  • Calm under pressure: make sound tradeoffs when priorities collide; escalate early and remove roadblocks for the team.
  • Continuous improvement mindset: apply TPM/Lean and 6S to cut waste and unplanned downtime; convert fixes into standard work.

Grow Your Team & Function

  • Develop people and process: coach leads/techs, build multi‑skill capability (electro‑mechanical, PLC/drive basics, pneumatics, vacuum), and institutionalize lessons learned into PMs/procedures.
  • Cross‑functional partnering: collaborate with Production, Process/Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, and Facilities to align maintenance windows and readiness for builds.

Shift & Schedule

  • Supports a 24/7 manufacturing environment; may require day/night/weekend/holiday coverage and periodic on‑call to meet production needs.

Physical & Work Conditions

  • Frequent standing/walking; bending, kneeling, climbing; repetitive hand use; ability to safely lift/push/pull up to ~50 lbs. with proper technique and PPE. May work around production machinery, at heights, on uneven surfaces, and operate lifts/forklifts per training.

Pre-Requisites / Skills / Experience Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications

Required

  • 7+ years in high‑tech manufacturing equipment maintenance, including 3+ years leading technicians/leads in a multi‑shift operation.
  • Demonstrated use of RCM/FMEA, RCA (5 Whys, 8D/DMAIC), and TPM/Lean to improve uptime, quality, and cost.
  • Proficiency with CMMS work management, planning/scheduling, and reliability/financial metrics (availability, MTBF/MTTR, PM compliance, labor & parts cost).
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills; able to lead under time pressure and shifting priorities.

Preferred

  • Bachelor’s in Engineering/Technology (or equivalent experience).
  • Background with thin‑film/high‑vacuum and electro‑mechanical production equipment (robotics, motion control, PLCs, pneumatics).
  • SMRP affiliation and/or CMRP/CMRT; Lean Six Sigma Green Belt.
