Job Description - Supervisor Sleep Lab - Neurology

Position Summary

Supervises daily activities of sleep lab and sleep technologists and technicians. Works closely with clinical administrator to ensure adequate coverage of all clinical hours while providing high quality clinical care and excellent customer service in order to provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders. This may involve polysomnography, diagnostic and therapeutic services or patient care and education. Position is a working supervisor functioning as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist in a busy diagnostic sleep lab within the Department of Neurology. Position is second shift, 2:00 pm -10:30 pm, Monday-Friday.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate a high commitment to excellent patient experience through customer service and high-quality care in all interactions with patients and their families, team members, Neurology faculty, staff and referring physicians. Focuses on a service culture that aligns with the Department of Neurology’s mission and vision.
  • Overall description of roles (dependent on department need):
    • Supervise the work of Polysomnographic Technologists and Technicians and Technical Specialist.
    • Create and maintain schedules and on-call roster for sleep lab staff to ensure adequate coverage of sleep lab.
    • Resolve personnel problems, conducts meetings pertinent to staffing issues and documents appropriately.
    • Ensure appropriate competencies are maintained by Sleep technologists and technicians.
    • Supervise training of new employees, conducts performance evaluations, job performance counseling.
    • High-level support.
    • Perform functions to support physicians in clinical setting.
    • Duties may include patient appointment scheduling, pre-arrival work such as insurance eligibility, pre-certifications, answering patient calls, checking-in patients, collecting required data and entering it into the EMR, placing patients in rooms, etc.
  • Patient Care Duties
    • Serve as a working supervisor able to cover all patient check-in/out processes and provide patient care duties:
    • Perform both direct patient care and duties that support patient care. Examples are:
    • Direct patient care - vital signs, placing patients in exam rooms, sleep testing procedures and/or treatments, cleaning and stocking sleep rooms; 2. Supporting patient care -obtaining charts, scheduling tests and/or appointments, obtaining pre-certifications.
    • Conduct technical duties of polysomnographic technologist, including: gathering and analyzing patient information, testing preparation procedures, polysomnographic procedures (PSG, PAP, MSLT/MWT, HSAT, etc.), polysomnographic record scoring and over-scoring.
    • Work in EMR and other clinical applications.
  • Communication and Documentation
    • Schedule and assign work to other sleep technologists/technicians to ensure appropriate staffing; assists in orientating and training new technologists/technicians and trainees.
    • May route phone messages, patient questions and telephone communications to appropriate personnel.
    • Complete necessary paperwork and documentation in a timely manner.
    • Answer questions from patient/family regarding treatments, diagnosis and procedures using department standard operating procedures.
    • Complete requisitions/orders per Washington University guidelines.
  • Equipment and Supplies
    • Monitor supply inventory, ensuring adequate supplies, equipment, or garments are available and that they comply with regulations.
    • Clean and stock sleep rooms and follows infection control procedures for sleep supplies and equipment.
  • Other Functions
    • Maintain required HIPAA compliance, skills/competencies and participates in in-services, staff programs, continuing education and cross-training programs according to established standards and Washington University policies. Maintains RPSGT certification and BLS.
    • Comply with OSHA, state and federal regulatory sources/standards.
    • Ensure and enforce compliance to policies, procedures and standards established by accreditation with the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.
    • Participate in quality assurance/quality improvement activities to ensure appropriate clinical outcomes and offers recommendations for improved, more efficient care and service.
    • Supervise technical specialist in overseeing sleep lab quality assurance/quality improvement procedures to include development, implementation, oversight and reporting of quality assurance/quality improvement data.

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
