Supervisor-Arrhythmia Device Clinic

Full Time:  40 hours per week; Monday - Friday day shift

General Summary

Performs professional nursing, technical and administrative duties as they relate to the Arrhythmia Device Clinic. Performs a variety of functions related to implanted cardiac device management. Performs implant checks for outpatients, including device troubleshooting and pre-emptive care. Provides assessment, pre-procedural and follow up instruction and care to patients with implanted devices. Performs pacemaker parameter testing and remote monitoring, including the calculation of data and recognition of potential life-threatening cardiac irregularities. Responsible for selecting, training, orienting, evaluating and direct supervision of staff.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

• Performs diagnostic tests related to implanted cardiac device management. Provides nursing care including wound management, antibiotic therapy, identification of medication interactions and adverse effects under supervision of cardiologists. Provides assessment, pre-procedural and follow up instruction and care to patients with implanted devices. Responds to patient distress situations and assists with equipment quality control and inventory management. Provides all appropriate services to safely and efficiently complete patient procedures.


• Possesses the knowledge & skills level of basic and complex implanted cardiac device management. Maintains knowledge of cardiac concepts and clinical practices. Maintains operational knowledge of Arrhythmia Device equipment according to manufacturer’s specifications. Responsible for patient safety in the Arrhythmia Device Clinic and must be able to recognize cardiac arrhythmias and respond according to established protocols. Intervenes with appropriate therapy in the event of cardiac emergencies.


• Responsible for applying the scope of nursing practice defined in the standards of practice and the standards of professional performance. Provides direct care and delegates aspects of care to other members of the health care team consistent with their level of preparation (licensure/ credentials/ certifications) and job description utilizing time and resources effectively.


• Leadership and direct supervision of Arrhythmia Device Clinic staff members. Implements and maintains training system for staff.


• Administers policies and procedures according to established best clinical practices under the supervision of Cardiologists. Integrates evidence-based practice and research into practice.


• Maintains, troubleshoots and operates Arrhythmia Devices to ensure operability and safety. Calibrates equipment and performs routine preventive maintenance procedures.


• Collaborates with the multidisciplinary team through Relationship-Based Care, to support a healthy work environment and ensure a culture of safety


• Participates in shared governance, collectively working toward a common goal, through clinical practice, education, research, performance improvement, professional and satisfaction activities.


• Teaches and counsels patients and their families about cardiovascular disease, self-care management, procedures, risks, benefits, medications. Explains procedure and answers questions prior to the procedure.


• Prepares written documentation as required by the profession and the department, such as evaluation of results, individualized treatment plans, progress reports, and other such reports.

• Assists in selecting, training, orienting and evaluating staff. Prepares work schedules and makes recommendations for personnel actions.


• Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span of the assigned patient population. Assesses and interprets patient age specific data and provides appropriate, age specific treatment. Provides direct patient care to assigned patient age group(s).


• Demonstrates a commitment to patient, visitor and staff by: complying with all applicable safety regulations; learning the impact of medical errors and methodology that will lead to reduction of errors; reporting actual and potential errors, as well as hazardous conditions; identifying opportunities to standardize processes and "error proof" systems that will lead to increased safety; and participating in safety education programs and root cause analyses as required.


• Maintains established policies and procedures, objectives, quality assessment, safety, environmental and infection control standards. Prepares and maintains written documentation as required by the profession and the department.


• Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, attends in-services, workshops and staff meetings as required.


• Provides outstanding service to all customers; fosters teamwork; and practices fiscal responsibility through improvement and innovation.


• Prepares rooms with appropriate instruments, sutures, supplies and equipment.


• Assists Cardiologists as required.

Qualifications

Minimum Education:

• Associates Degree Graduate from a nursing program. Required


• Bachelors Degree Preferred

Work Experience:

• 2 years Cardiac experience. Required and


• EKG and physiologic monitoring. Required and


• Experience in electric countershock techniques. Required

Licenses:

• Licensed Registered Nurse Upon Hire Required or


• Registered Nurse Multi State License Upon Hire Required and


• Basic Life Support Upon Hire Required and


• Advanced Cardiac Life Support Upon Hire Required


• Registered Cardiac Electrophysiology Specialist Upon Hire Preferred and


• Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist Upon Hire Preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Ability to handle patients who present in a variety of conditions.


• Possess/displays leadership qualities.


• Knowledge of cardiology and electrophysiology.


• Ability to function as a team member.


• Excellent interpersonal skills.


• Understands cardiovascular pathophysiology.


• Ability to identify rhythms on a on read a 12 lead EKG.


• Ability to identify lethal arrhythmias 100% of the time.
