The Switchboard Operator – Paramedic supports emergency communication operations by coordinating critical information flow between EMS providers, hospital teams, and regional partners to ensure timely and effective patient care. This role requires a current West Virginia EMT-Paramedic license and leverages field experience to activate response teams, manage urgent communications, and support rapid response during critical patient events. How you’ll contribute 

A Switchboard Operator - Paramedic who excels in this role:

  • Supports the efficient operation of the Region 1 Medical Command Center by establishing communication linkages and promptly relaying critical information to the patient care team.
  • Activates appropriate response teams for patient care alerts (e.g., STEMI, Trauma, Stroke) and receives and relays patient information from inbound ground and air transport units according to protocol.
  • Serves as a regional communication and disaster resource coordinator, facilitating effective information flow during emergencies.
  • Maintains accurate and timely documentation to support patient care continuity and regulatory compliance.
  • Prioritizes multiple urgent communications and manages information flow effectively under pressure.
  • Collaborates with EMS providers, hospital staff, and emergency response partners to ensure coordinated patient care.
  • Performs clerical duties such as filing, mail preparation, data entry, scanning, and faxing to support operational functions while adhering to confidentiality and HIPAA standards.

 

Schedule: Full-Time, Varied:  Combination of Nights, Days, Weekends. Three 12-hour shifts, may pick a 4-hour shift.

What we’re looking for

  • Current certification as a West Virginia EMT Paramedic required.
  • Minimum of 2 years recent and active field experience as a Paramedic required.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to accurately relay critical information.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize multiple urgent communications in a fast-paced environment.
  • Working knowledge of emergency medical protocols, dispatch procedures, and regional EMS systems.
  • Proficiency with basic computer applications and clerical tasks such as data entry and report preparation.
  • Detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills to manage documentation and support operational functions.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with EMS providers, hospital staff, and emergency response teams.
  • Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions under pressure.
