Description

Based at the Alabama School for the Blind, Talladega, AL

The Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB) is the world’s most comprehensive education, rehabilitation and service program serving individuals of all ages who are deaf, blind, deafblind and multi-disabled and their families. Founded in 1858, AIDB serves more than 36,000 infants, toddlers, children, adults and seniors with hearing and vision loss throughout Alabama each year.

Our services literally span a lifetime including five campuses in Talladega, ten regional centers located in Birmingham, Dothan, Huntsville, Mobile, Montgomery, Talladega, Tuscaloosa, Tuscumbia, Opelika and Decatur with programs that range from early to senior intervention, traditional and nontraditional education services in residential and outreach settings and a manufacturing facility that is the state’s largest employer of adults who are blind and deaf.

 

ABOUT SHORT-TERM PROGRAMS

Short-Term Programs are responsible for providing the highest level of care and education for students who are blind and visually impaired in the state of Alabama from public school, private school, or homeschool. Students will attend weekend group courses throughout the school year that focus on the Expanded Core Curriculum. Courses are housed on the campus of the Alabama School for the Blind in Talladega, AL.

The right candidate for this position will have a passion for working with students and colleagues to ensure all Short-Term Program students receive a world class experience that arms them with an abundance of knowledge and skills which enable them to live and function independently to the highest degree possible. This role will make effective decisions and solve problems using sound judgment, guided initiative, and team work. This role requires excellent listening skills, communication skills, and teaching skills. This will be accomplished by demonstrating flexibility, positive attitude, agility, and professional maturity. You will play a vital role in the lives of our students and be a part of the miracles that happen every day at AIDB.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum High school diploma or
  • Must have one year (1) work experience in an educational
  • Must be able to physically assist students as

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working with blind or visually impaired
  • Certified NFB Braille Transcriptionist
  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

 

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn Braille, including becoming a National Library of Congress certified Braille Transcriptionist within the first thirty-six (36) months of employment.
  • Orientation and Mobility training required within twelve (12) months of
  • Must be able to physically assist students as
  • Must complete and maintain CPR/First Aid, Medication and Behavior Management training within 12 months of employment.
  • Research, build, and implement curriculum for the Expanded Core
  • Cooperate with other STP teachers in implementing the unique instructional program for students who are blind and visually impaired.
  • Assist teachers and staff with individual student(s) as
  • Assist teachers and staff with reproducing materials, checking papers, recording progress reports, filing, typing, delivering, copying, laminating, and performing other duties as
  • Carry out instructional duties under teacher direction as
  • Handle emergency situations in a calm and professional
  • Interact with parents, coworkers, and stakeholders in a courteous and professional manner .
  • Transport and chaperone student(s) to, from, and while on field trips and other
  • Attend departmental meetings, in-services, training sessions, and workshops
  • Perform breakfast and lunch
  • Assist with extracurricular
  • Keep abreast of current research and teaching strategies of the Expanded Core Curriculum for implementation in the classroom settings.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule to include
  • Serve as a role model to students displaying professional behavior and
  • Protect confidentiality of student
  • Be familiar with Google Suites, Zoom, and Microsoft
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the
  • Upon offer of employment the applicant must submit to a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by AIDB.

 

SALARY: S1 HS, $19.88

 

This is a nonexempt position and is subject to overtime and/or compensatory time provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act
