DESCRIPTION

The Elementary Social Studies Support Personnel is employed through the Howard County Public School System and is assigned to the Elementary Social Studies Office. Under the supervision of the Elementary Social Studies Coordinator, the person in this position collaborates with students, schools, families, and community members to provide students with authentic learning opportunities and social studies programs. 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Plans and facilitates opportunities for academic support and enrichment.

  • Assists in the creation of an instructional environment and resources that are conducive to the intellectual, physical, social and emotional development of students.

  • Communicates with staff and community as necessary for implementation of social studies programs such as the Simulated Congressional Hearings, Unheard Perspectives Showcase, Project Citizen, etc.

  • Attends staff and planning meetings as required and necessary for continuous individual and program improvement.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must meet all of the following qualifications listed below to be considered for the vacancy. Use the application, cover letter, and resume to specifically address each qualification.

  • Associates Degree

  • Experience working with students and families from diverse backgrounds

  • Basic Computer Literacy

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to work collaboratively with administrators, colleagues, school-based staff, students, parents, and community members.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to properly maintain confidential information.

  • Academic skills necessary to provide effective support to K-5 students

  • Ability to connect with and motivate students

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

There will be a pre-screening of all applicant credentials. Interviews will be limited to those applicants who, in addition to meeting the basic requirements, have experiences and education that most closely match the position qualifications and the needs of the school system.

  • An official proof of education (A copy of official HS Transcript/HS Diploma/ a copy of official college Transcript) may be required.

  • Foreign Education: An education evaluation by one of the agencies approved by Maryland State Dept. of Education (MSDE).

  • Both paid and volunteer employment history from the past 10 years with no gaps including employment dates, position held, and name of the supervisor.

Interviews will be limited to those applicants who, in addition to meeting the basic requirements, have experience and education which most closely match the position qualifications and the needs of the school system.

Professional references may be contacted prior to any offer of employment. Recommended candidates will be required to provide references from current and recent supervisors.

All employees, regular and temporary, must be fingerprinted, have a criminal background investigation completed, and successfully complete the Maryland Employment History Review, pursuant to Section 6-113.2 of the Education Article, Annotated Code of Maryland. In addition, some positions will require completion of a physical examination and/or drug testing.
