Temporary Food Service Transporter (Temporary)
Classification Title: Temporary Position
DESCRIPTION
The Temporary Food Service Transporter is employed through the Howard County Public School System. Under the guidance and leadership of the Food and Nutrition Service Supervisor and Area Field Representatives, the person in this temporary position collaborates with Central Office and Food and Nutrition Service staff to deliver food items, supplies, and other materials to and from school food service production facilities and school food service satellite schools daily.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must meet all the qualifications below to be considered for the vacancy.
Education:
The position requires completion of a standard high school diploma or GED
Experience:
Must have at least three (3) years of driving experience.
Certifications/Licenses:
Possession of an appropriate and valid Maryland Motor Vehicle Operator’s License (non-CDL accepted) with an acceptable driving record generally consisting of no more than 1–3 minor moving violations or at-fault accidents within the past 3 to 5 years, with no major infractions like DUIs, reckless driving, or license suspensions.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Good knowledge of local streets and road systems.
Knowledge and understanding of the relationship between sanitary food handling techniques and their potential impact on food product safety.
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Ability to communicate effectively with Food and Nutrition Service staff, school administrators, and school staff.
Ability to comply with all regulations for the handling of food items.
Ability to perform manual labor, including lifting, carrying, and moving equipment and supplies. · Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Ability to properly maintain confidential information.
ESSENTIAL POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
The list below is a summary of the functions of the job, not an exhaustive or comprehensive list of all possible job responsibilities, tasks, and duties.
Operates a box truck or approved vehicle to transport food products and supplies. Maintain the cleanliness of the vehicle. Keeps an up-to-date route sheet in the vehicle at all times.
Transports food from designated schools to other schools or distribution points according to pre-approved routes, delivery times, and schedules, and transporter clusters as determined by Food and Nutrition Service.
Complies with proper food handling techniques while maintaining the highest standard of quality and food safety practices for students and staff.
Inspects food and food related supplies for conformity to orders and reports shortages, damages or spoilage, and other discrepancies. Arranges and moves food items to and from inventory and cold storage areas to other food sites as needed.
Attends food and nutrition training and other meetings, as necessary to meet the annual continuing education/training requirements for USDA professional standards for school nutrition employees.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
This job involves loading, lifting, and carrying food and food products from kitchens to vehicles and from vehicles to kitchens in receiving schools. May occasionally involve lifting 50 pounds or more from time to time.

All employees, regular and temporary, must be fingerprinted, have a criminal background investigation completed, and successfully complete the Maryland Employment History Review, pursuant to Section 6-113.2 of the Education Article, Annotated Code of Maryland. In addition, some positions will require completion of a physical examination and/or drug testing.
