Legrand has an exciting opportunity for a Test Engineer to join the Pass & Seymour team in Syracuse, NY. We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic individual to perform laboratory testing and evaluation of electrical wiring device products in support of research, development, and quality assurance. The ideal candidate will have hands-on electrical/mechanical testing experience, the ability to troubleshoot test issues, and the ability to document and communicate results clearly to engineering and product stakeholders. This role will work within the Electrical Infrastructure business to follow, apply, and help improve test protocols and troubleshooting procedures; prepare test samples and equipment for evaluation; perform mechanical/endurance and electrical/electronic testing; and collect, record, and analyze test data using electronic test equipment and Microsoft Office tools.
What Will You Do?
• Support the Client Test program by coordinating assigned activities with internal teams, agency partners, NRTLs, external laboratories, and applicable international certification organizations.
• Assist with maintaining certification statuses for assigned products, including but not limited to UL/ETL Listings, NEC, CSA, and CB Scheme certifications.
• Assist in planning and execute qualification, certification, reliability, thermal, environmental, mechanical, endurance, electrical/electronic, and performance testing for wiring device products using established methods and guidance.
• Work with Product Managers, Product Design Engineers, Quality Assurance, Compliance, and Sustaining Engineering during new product development and product changes to help evaluate designs against regulatory, market, safety, performance, and continued-compliance requirements.
• Follow established test protocols and troubleshooting procedures, and contribute to improvements in test equipment, fixtures, documentation practices, and laboratory capabilities supporting certification, reliability, validation, and product evaluation activities.
• Conduct electrical and electronic tests using laboratory equipment such as oscilloscopes, digital multimeters, LCR meters, power supplies, function generators, spectrum analyzers, hi-pot testers, electronic load banks, and ESD simulators.
• Perform mechanical and performance evaluations, including cycle testing, torque testing, plug insertion/withdrawal force evaluations, and other product-specific validation testing.
• Prepare test samples and fixtures, set up equipment for evaluation, and support prototyping, product qualification, validation, and certification activities.
• Participate in root-cause investigations, field-issue evaluations, validation testing, and resolution of technical issues related to product changes, sustaining engineering activities, and customer or field concerns.
• Help maintain accurate product documentation within certification files and communicate test findings, certification updates, and potential design-change implications to internal stakeholders with guidance from experienced team members.
• Collect, record, analyze, and summarize test data; prepare technical documentation, test reports, certification records, and stakeholder summaries.
• Support safe lab operations and compliance with applicable laboratory safety guidelines and relevant wiring device standards and regulatory expectations, including UL, CSA, NEC, and applicable international requirements.
• Support certification and external-testing logistics, including obtaining quotes, procuring test samples, scheduling laboratory time, assisting with third-party witnessing, collecting documentation, and tracking assigned deliverables.
• Travel up to 15% to external test laboratories, primarily domestic, to support certification programs as necessary.
Education
• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or equivalent experience; Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, preferred. Master’s degree is a plus.
Qualifications
• Minimum of 3 years of experience in a professional engineering, test, compliance, certification, or related technical setting.
• Experience in a laboratory environment performing electrical/electronic, mechanical, reliability, thermal, environmental, qualification, or certification testing; wiring device experience preferred.
• Familiarity with low-voltage power distribution equipment, electrical/electronic systems, components, testing methodologies, and applicable product safety, performance, and certification requirements.
• Familiarity with 3 phase power distribution equipment, electrical/electronic systems, components, testing methodologies is a plus.
• Exposure to or experience working with NRTLs, external test laboratories, agency partners, certification bodies, and common laboratory instruments.
• Sound analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills; attention to detail and the ability to organize work and manage assigned priorities.
• Effective verbal and written communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills, with the ability to prepare clear technical reports, certification documentation, and concise summaries.
• Computer proficient with Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
• Experience programming microcontrollers is a plus.
• This position may occasionally require exposure to manufacturing areas where personal protective equipment, such as safety glasses and mandatory hearing protection, may be required.
• Able to lift and carry up to 40 lbs.
