JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE:  Tooling and Parts Machinist                                                              
FLSA STATUS: Hourly

 
Luxfer Magtech specializes in developing, manufacturing, and supplying a broad range of products that safeguard and protect, ranging from flameless ration heaters that give our U.S. Military a hot meal; innovative chemical response kits designed to detect and decontaminate chemical warfare agents; to nutritious hot food and beverage options for militaries and first responders.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:  This position is responsible for creating parts or tooling for the repair and maintenance of production equipment, working both with and without drawings and specs. Set up, adjust and operate conventional and/or special purpose machine tools to perform diversified and difficult operations on work having close and exacting tolerances, several dimensional relationships, unusual contours and finish specifications frequently involving the improvisation of machines and tooling to accomplish results. Broad knowledge of machining technology, operating skills and shop techniques together with long-term diversified experience are required for success.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Plan and determine fabrication tool setup procedures and operating sequences; select tooling attachments, spindle speeds, tool feed rates, workpiece securing methods, supports, etc., best suited for nature of operations, machine and size of the workpiece.
  • Position, align and secure workpiece on the bed of the machine, clamp and support work securely, using care to avoid distortion that may affect finished dimensions or secure workpiece between centers or on face plates of turning machines.
  • Set tooling in holders and calibrate tool heads to orient tools and workpiece to reference point for operations, using care to ensure settings to assure travel clearances and avoid tool deflection affecting dimensions and finishes.
  • Calibrate machine during operations for rate and amount of cut to obtain the required finish and dimensional specifications; check work to assure dimensional conformance where several related dimensions and unusual contours are required.
  • Grind or prescribe grind for special and standard tooling to compensate for material variations and cutting conditions. 
  • Use a wide range of precision measuring instruments and devices to set up, operate machine and check work.
  • Makes repair parts if not commercially available.
  • Plans setup and operates typical machine shop machine tools, producing parts to tolerances and company specifications. Uses typical machinist's hand tools.
  • Sets up and tests production equipment under power, testing for mechanical difficulties, tracing to their sources, and correction problems.
  • All other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
  • Adherence to health and safety regulations (e.g., constant use of PPE)
  • Graduate of Technical School, Full Apprenticeship Program, or completion of an in-company training program to satisfaction of operations
  • Three or more years of experience as a fully qualified machinist
  • Close attention and care required to prevent damage to complex machine tools or costly materials
  • Ability to read blueprints and specifications
  • Ability to produce parts in absence of drawings or specifications
  • Attention to detail and ability to produce precision work
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION:
  • Must be able to frequently lift and/or move up to 40 pounds, bend or stoop
  • Must be able to regularly reach with hands/arms and speak clearly/hear; required to stand, walk, sit and use hands to manipulate, handle or feel
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus
