Top-Pick Fork Lift Operator/CDL Shuttle Driver

Position Summary 

The Top-Pick Forklift Operator / CDL Shuttle Driver is a hybrid position responsible for safely moving containers, materials, and equipment both within company facilities and between production locations. This employee will operate a Top-Pick container handler and other material-handling equipment while also driving a commercial truck to transport containers, materials, and finished products between company sites. The ideal candidate is safety-focused, dependable, flexible, and able to transition between forklift operations and commercial driving responsibilities based on daily production needs. 

Responsibilities 

Top-Pick and Material-Handling Responsibilities 

• Safely operate a Top-Pick container handler to lift, move, stack, stage, load, and unload shipping containers. 
• Move containers and materials to designated production bays, staging areas, storage locations, and loading areas. 
• Load and unload trucks and trailers according to production and shipping priorities. 
• Inspect containers, lifting equipment, and work areas before each movement. 
• Confirm that containers are properly secured and that the surrounding area is clear before lifting or transporting a load. 
• Maintain safe spacing, stacking height, and container placement throughout the yard. 
• Follow established traffic patterns, speed limits, hand signals, and spotter requirements. 
• Perform and document required pre-shift and post-shift equipment inspections. 
• Report equipment damage, unsafe conditions, mechanical issues, and container damage immediately. 
• Assist with general yard organization and material movement when needed. 

CDL Shuttle Driver Responsibilities 

• Safely operate a commercial truck to transport containers, materials, equipment, and finished products between company production locations. 
• Complete scheduled and unscheduled shuttle runs based on production priorities. 
• Perform and document required DOT-compliant pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections. 
• Properly connect, disconnect, secure, and inspect trailers and transported loads. 
• Verify bills of lading, transfer documents, load information, and delivery instructions. 
• Follow all applicable DOT regulations, traffic laws, company policies, and site-specific safety requirements. 
• Communicate delays, mechanical problems. 
• Maintain the cleanliness and basic condition of assigned trucks, trailers, and equipment. 
• Coordinate with production, materials, shipping, and receiving teams to support timely material flow. 

General Responsibilities 

• Prioritize work according to production schedules and operational needs. 
• Participate in daily safety meetings, toolbox talks, and operational planning meetings. 
• Follow all PPE, lockout/tagout,  and equipment-operation requirements. 
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment. 
• Work cooperatively with production employees, supervisors, spotters, and logistics personnel. 
• Assist with other operational and material-handling duties as assigned. 

• Valid Commercial Driver’s License—Class A required based on assigned equipment. 
• Acceptable motor vehicle record and ability to meet company insurance requirements. 
• Ability to complete company equipment certification and safety training. 
• Working knowledge of DOT regulations, vehicle inspections, load securement, and safe commercial driving practices. 
• Ability to safely maneuver commercial vehicles, trailers, and containers in congested production and yard environments. 
• Ability to read and understand production schedules, work orders, shipping documents, and safety procedures. 
• Dependable attendance and willingness to adjust daily responsibilities based on production needs. 
• High school diploma or GED preferred. 

Preferred Qualifications 

• Two or more years of commercial driving experience. 
• Two or more years of experience operating a Top-Pick or similar container-handling equipment. 
• Experience transporting shipping containers or operating within a manufacturing, industrial, logistics, or intermodal environment. 
• Experience using, inventory systems, or ERP systems. 
• Knowledge of basic preventive maintenance and equipment inspections. 

Physical and Work Requirements 

• Ability to repeatedly enter and exit trucks and heavy equipment. 
• Ability to sit and operate equipment for extended periods. 
• Ability to climb, bend, reach, push, pull, and safely lift up to 50 pounds. 
• Ability to work outdoors in varying temperatures and weather conditions. 
• Ability to work around moving equipment, trucks, trailers, production activity, noise, dust, and uneven surfaces. 
• Ability to work overtime, weekends, or adjusted schedules when required by production demands. 
• Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation. 

Safety Expectations

 Safety is the highest priority in this role. The employee must stop work whenever an unsafe condition exists and immediately notify supervision. No production or delivery priority takes precedence over safe equipment operation, proper load securement, or compliance with company and DOT requirements.
