The Pima County Department of Transportation is seeking a Traffic Signal and Lighting Supervisor to direct maintenance and improvement efforts for the County’s traffic signal and roadway lighting systems. This is a key leadership role for an experienced professional who takes pride in public service, values safety, reliability, and enjoys guiding skilled crews in a dynamic, field-oriented environment.
In this position, you will oversee the installation, maintenance, and repair of complex traffic signal systems, including controllers, detection devices, and networked equipment. This role requires advanced technical knowledge of electrical and electronic systems, as well as effective leadership and management capabilities.
This position works four 10-hour shifts, Monday through Thursday, from 6:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with periodic on-call duties during nights, weekends, and holidays.
Essential Functions:

Directs and participates in the analysis, repair, and maintenance of electrical or electronic systems, ensuring proper functionality;
Supervises the fabrication or modification of equipment, facilities, or systems based on technical references, engineering drawings, or plans;
Oversees the inspection, service, and maintenance of tools, equipment, and vehicles, ensuring they meet operational standards;
Conducts quality-control analysis on systems and equipment, directing remedial actions to ensure optimal performance;
Maintains detailed records of activity, operations, service, and usage for supported vehicles, equipment, and systems;
Coordinates and schedules maintenance activities using a computer-based work order system, ensuring efficiency;
Develops and monitors work-unit budgets, ensuring cost-effective resource utilization;
Prepares written and oral reports on activities, progress, and operational performance;
Estimates materials, supplies, and costs for unique operations or projects from sketches, engineering plans, and drawings;
Inspects and certifies the work of others, ensuring compliance with standards and safety requirements;
Assists management with the development of Requests for Bids (RFBs), contract provisions, and bid proposal evaluations;
Prepares sketches and drawings to communicate project details to supervisors, staff, or contractors;
Coordinates work-unit activities with other units, agencies, or contractors to optimize resource use and minimize service disruptions;
Monitors contractor performance, including goods and services provided, ensuring adherence to contract terms;
Supervises the proper storage, handling, use, and disposal of hazardous materials, ensuring safety and compliance.
Minimum Qualifications:
Eight years of journey-level experience in the field of electrical or electronic construction, maintenance, and/or repair of electrical or electronic systems INCLUDING two years of lead or supervisory experience in the field.
(Relevant education from an accredited college, trade school, or industry-recognized apprenticeship program may substitute for up to three years of aforementioned experience.)
OR:
Two years with Pima County in a Traffic Signal Technician II position.

Preferred Qualifications: (Be specific in describing your experience in your application. Ensure the descriptions provided illustrate your competencies, specifically addressing the required and preferred qualifications.):
Experience in traffic signal and roadway lighting system maintenance, including troubleshooting networked signal systems, advanced controllers, intelligent transportation systems (ITS), and other electrical components.
Experience supervising or leading teams in public works, municipal operations, or the private sector, including assigning and prioritizing work, mentoring staff, monitoring performance, and promoting operational excellence.
Experience planning and executing projects and operations, including budgeting, scheduling, and resource allocation, to achieve safe, efficient, and standards-compliant outcomes.
Experience communicating and coordinating with internal teams, engineers, contractors, stakeholders, and external agencies.
Experience using computer-based work order and asset management systems to manage maintenance activities, track assets, and maintain accurate operational records.
Selection Procedure:
Pima County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates that meet the minimum qualifications. All applications will be assessed based on an evaluation of the listed education and experience. Candidates meeting the minimum qualifications may be further evaluated/scored against any advertised Preferred Qualifications. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidate from a referral list provided by Human Resources. Additional assessments/testing may be required as part of the selection process.
Supplemental Information:
Licenses and Certificates: Valid driver license is required at time of application. Valid AZ driver license is required at time of appointment. The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicant’s suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures. Failure to obtain and maintain the required licenses and certifications shall be grounds for termination. Any offer of employment resulting from this recruitment is contingent upon Fleet Services’ review and approval of the candidate’s driving record.
Special Notice Items: The County requires pre-employment background checks. Successful candidates will receive a post-offer, pre-employment background screening to include verification of work history, education, and criminal conviction history. A prior criminal conviction will not automatically disqualify a candidate from employment with the County.
Physical/Sensory Requirements: All positions may require any or all of the following: work independently in the field manually working on and installing electrical, electronic and other equipment; be able to see and hear traffic; lift and carry up to 75 pounds; ascend and descend ladders and stairs to reach and work upon elevated or below-grade work platforms; operate bucket and boom trucks working at heights of 50 feet; safely operate assigned vehicles and other powered equipment; work in extremes of heat, humidity, dust, or cold; wear required safety clothing and equipment; differentiate between colors. Additional physical and sensory abilities will be determined by position.
