Job Description - Train Operations Manager

POSITION SUMMARY

The Train Operations Manager is responsible for providing operational support to terminal management while directing the arrival and departure of intermodal trains, as well as managing the switching of rail cars between storage yards and the working terminal. This role ensures all operations are executed efficiently, safely, and in compliance with company standards and federal railroad regulations.


Requirements

  • Promote and facilitate company safety initiatives  to instill and maintain a culture of safety.
  • Direct and manage the activities of multiple train crews simultaneously to ensure efficient operations.
  • Create switch lists and direct safe, accurate,  and efficient switching operations.
  • Receive and interpret written and oral instructions from the operations team.
  • Manage rail car inventory.
  • Manage inbound train arrivals and assign appropriate storage tracks.
  • Direct Class 1 train crews in the building and timely departure of outbound trains in the support yard.
  • Apply knowledge of federal railroad regulations, operational guidelines, and safety rules to daily activities.
  • Read, comprehend, and enforce safety manuals, government regulations, operating instructions, and company policies.
  • Exercise sound judgment and logical reasoning to define problems, collect data, and develop effective solutions.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with terminal managers, train crews, engineers, and external railroad officials.
  • Provide leadership, direction, and performance  feedback to team members to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Provide Timely and accurate support to the terminal management team.
  • Identify operational issues and contact appropriate parties with recommendations.
  • Support cohesive operations by performing a variety of administrative functions at the direction of the Marine Terminal while maintaining strong collaboration with departments across Keelson Management.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • College degree preferred; equivalent work experience may be considered.
  • Minimum of 5 years of freight train experience, with strong preference for switching-related operations.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of railroad safety procedures and operating practices.
  • Ability to work extended or irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.) and rail inventory management systems.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills.
  • Highly self-motivated with strong attention to detail and operational awareness.
