Traveling Mechanic

Job Summary:

The Mechanic works under limited supervision perform work of considerable difficulty in the repair and maintenance of medium duty truck systems, hydraulics, and equipment; performs related work as assigned.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

• Attendance and punctuality.
• Repair and replace damaged or worn parts in a correct and timely manner.
• Operate and inspect machines or heavy equipment to diagnose defects.
• Clean, lubricate, and perform other routine maintenance work on equipment and vehicles.
• Test mechanical products and equipment after repair or assembly to ensure proper performance and compliance with manufacturers' specifications.
• Overhaul and test machines or equipment to ensure operating efficiency.
• Fit bearings to adjust, repair, or overhaul mobile mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic equipment.
• Examine parts for damage or excessive wear, using micrometers and gauges.
• Diagnose faults or malfunctions to determine required repairs, using engine diagnostic equipment such as computerized test equipment and calibration devices.
• Repair, rewire, and troubleshoot electrical systems.
• Clean parts by spraying them with grease solvent or immersing them in tanks of solvent.
• Weld or solder broken parts and structural members, using electric or gas welders and soldering tools.
• Adjust, maintain, and repair or replace subassemblies, such as transmissions and crawler heads, using hand tools, jacks, and cranes.
• Adjust and maintain industrial machinery, using control and regulating devices.
• Assemble gear systems, and align frames and gears.
• Schedule maintenance for industrial machines and equipment, and keep equipment service records.
• Communicate with immediate supervisor when there are parts or repair issues or items that have not been handled and be quick to ask for help when needed.
• Read and understand operating manuals, blueprints, and technical drawings.
• Research, order, and maintain parts inventory for services and repairs.
• Company Vehicle: a) Use company vehicles for company business only and follow all state and federal laws. Speeding violations are not tolerated. Write-ups are issued for violations recorded by GPS report; three or more violations in a year's time are grounds for immediate termination.  b) Follow company driver's/vehicles policy and keep assigned vehicle clean (includes back of vehicle, inside bins, interior and exterior of vehicle). c) Complete all DOT requirements, such as medical card certification, and have a valid CDL. 
• Environmental: Insure all fluids used in trucks are stored in proper locations. Insure all used fluids are disposed of properly and any spills are cleaned up immediately and supervisor is notified of any issues that arise from such.
• Complete service orders on every piece of equipment that is worked on.  
• Repair Orders: a) Are due weekly; b) Are to be accurate: date, mileage, equipment #, crew #, and labor hours.  Driving time to be allocated among every piece of equipment worked on that day; c) Are to include descriptions and in this order: 1)complaint - what is said to be wrong;  2) cause - after assessment what problem did you find?  3) correction - the process and what it takes to complete the repair. d) Accurately bill parts to the repair order and includes part #, description and cost.  
• Inventory: 1) Keep an accurate inventory; 2) complete quarterly inventory reports and turn in to supervisor.
• Complete check in and out forms on each piece of equipment worked on and before leaving yard or on arrival from a job.
• Maintain a professional appearance, wear uniform shirts tucked in and wear appropriate work shoes or boots.
• Be on time and accessible.
• Perform any and all assigned tasks as requested by management of Chain Electric Co.
• Have a positive attitude toward managers in the field, co-workers, etc., and keep your supervisor apprised of issues/challenges. 

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

 Education: High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) 

Experience:  3 to 7 years experience as a mechanic of medium-duty trucks and equipment

Computer Skills: Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook 

Other Requirements 

• Extensive knowledge of medium duty truck systems and hydraulics. 
• Ability to maintain and repair Altec/Terex Bucket and Derrick Units on various medium duty chassis 
• Organizational skills to keep up with parts, inventory and repair 
• Must have own tools.
