Turf & Grounds Irrigation Technician

Position Summary

The Turf & Grounds Irrigation Technician supports the performance, safety, and sustainability of Memorial Park's irrigation and turf health systems by performing daily inspections, repairs, preventive maintenance, turf care applications, and related fieldwork within assigned park areas. This role follows established standards and supports the Irrigation Coordinator in maintaining reliable, efficient irrigation systems and healthy turf conditions. 

This role reports to the Turf & Grounds Supervisor.

• Work Location: On-site at Memorial Park
• Schedule: Monday–Friday at 6:00 AM – 2:30 PM; occasional evenings and weekends required based on operational needs (seasonal adjustments may apply)
• Employment Status: Full-Time
• FLSA Status: Non-Exempt (Hourly)

 Key Responsibilities
Irrigation & Turf Health Operations

• Support the Irrigation Coordinator in carrying out daily irrigation and turf health priorities within assigned areas.
• Conduct routine inspections and preventive maintenance of irrigation infrastructure, including controllers, valves, heads, dripline, pump systems, municipal connections, wiring, and associated components.
• Troubleshoot, repair, adjust, and replace irrigation components using established procedures and under the direction of the Irrigation Coordinator.
• Assist with irrigation programming and system adjustments based on site conditions, turf needs, weather, and direction from the Irrigation Coordinator or Supervisor.
• Identify and communicate leaks, pressure concerns, coverage deficiencies, drainage problems, damaged components, and other system issues.
• Monitor turf and soil conditions for dry areas, excess moisture, turf stress, pest activity, disease symptoms, weed pressure, and other concerns.
• Perform fertilizer, herbicide, fungicide, pesticide, and soil amendment applications under appropriate supervision and in accordance with established protocols, product labels, and regulatory standards.
• Support aeration, topdressing, turf replacement, overseeding, and other turf care activities.
• Accurately document inspections, repairs, chemical applications, programming changes, material usage, and completed work using established tracking systems.
• Assist with irrigation modifications, installations, improvement projects, and contractor work within assigned areas as directed.

Safety & Operational Standards

• Interact with park visitors in a courteous and professional manner and model service standards.
• Reinforce safe work practices and proper equipment use among team members. 
• Support compliance with safety policies and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Elevate safety concerns and operational risks to the Supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

• Two (2) or more years of professional experience in irrigation systems, turf management, landscape maintenance, grounds maintenance, or a related field preferred.
• Basic knowledge of irrigation systems and components, including controllers, valves, heads, dripline, wiring, and associated equipment.
• Ability to identify common irrigation problems and perform routine troubleshooting and repairs.
• Experience safely operating irrigation, spray, landscape, or grounds maintenance equipment and tools.
• Ability to follow irrigation maps, work orders, application instructions, safety procedures, and verbal or written directions.
• Basic computer and mobile-device skills with the ability to learn digital work order, irrigation, and tracking systems.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Valid Texas driver's license.

Physical & Environmental Requirements

• Ability to perform heavy, physical labor daily in all weather conditions.
• Ability to prioritize work functions and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to lift 50 lbs. repeatedly throughout a given workday. 
• Ability to operate power equipment throughout a workday.
• Ability to stand, crouch, and climb ladders, and perform various types of manual labor throughout the day.
