Ultrasound Technologist - Casual

General Definition and Scope of Job

Has the latitude for independent judgment, ingenuity, and initiative to complete the requested procedure within the scope of his/her license.  Assists in mentoring student technologists in their clinical rotation of Trinity Health Grand Haven Hospital.

JOB STATUS: Casual,  On-Call and within 45 minutes of call to arrival at hospital 

What are the Minimum Skills, Experience and Educational Requirements?

1. A High School graduate and a graduate of an AMA approved school of Ultrasound or an equivalent amount of education with a valid current Ultrasound license/certificate. An RDMS registration through the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers is the recognized standard. Or


2. Registration or certification through another Medical Imaging modality such as the ARRT and one (1) or two (2) years of intense Ultrasound training and experience or with intent on taking Board Exams within a 1 year period.


3. Must be able to read, write and speak the English language sufficiently to communicate accurate and tactful explanations to people who may be under some stress and to maintain all necessary record keeping.


4. Must have the ability to successfully complete general orientation and the clinical skills guides of an Ultrasound Technologist.


5. Must have current BLS certification.

What are the Critical Demands of the Job?

1. Must be able to handle multiple demands and make decisions about priorities.


2. Must have the ability to assist in the transfer of patients from wheelchair or stretcher to the Ultrasound equipment.


3. Must be able to type/keyboard to acquire the data for Ultrasound procedures.


4. Must be able to stand or sit at length as needed to perform the requested examination.


5. Is expected to encounter continuous viewing of the Ultrasound monitor in a limited lighting situation.

What are the Working Conditions?

1. Works in a limited lighting Ultrasound setting.


2. Potential for exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other infectious diseases.


3. Occasional limited exposure to small amounts of ionizing radiation.


4. Works with a variety of complex electronic and computerized diagnostic Ultrasound equipment and automatic film processing equipment.


5. Lifts, positions, pushes and/or transfers patients for Ultrasound procedures. Lifts supplies and small equipment associated with the above.


6. Pleasant progressive acute care environment committed to family-centered care.


7. Must be able to tolerate wearing protective gear (including, but not limited to, barrier gloves, moisture impervious lab coats, protective eye wear, and face shields).


8. Conditions may be stressful at times.

This position may require work on all shifts:  days, evenings and nights and will also involve taking call on weekends, nights and holidays.
