Job Description Summary

Postdoc Position (in the Norris Lab)

The laboratory of Dr. Norris in the Department of Regenerative Medicine and Cell Biology is looking for a postdoctoral fellow work on hypermobile Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. We are looking for creative candidates with a strong background in molecular biology and genetics, a keen interest in developmental biology, have experience in working with animal models, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and experience with grant submissions. Experience with performing analyses related to various omics techniques such as RNAseq, scRNAseq, ATACSeq and downstream analyses is preferred. Additional experience with performing and analyzing Whole Exome Sequencing as well as dealing with large datasets related to genome wide association studies is a plus. The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate a significant level of independence and scientific initiative. The applicant should also be able to demonstrate ability to mentor students at the graduate and undergraduate levels.

Job Description

Job Duties:

1.      Research – Essential (35%): To develop and conduct, within the context of the funded projects, research in consultation with, and under the supervision of Dr. Norris. Individuals will be responsible for the design and implementation of experiments relevant to the project.

2.      Mentorship – Essential (25%): To assist in training of graduate students and other laboratory personnel.  We anticipate that a successful candidate for this position will be able to mentor at least 2 graduate students who are currently on this project.  This includes having one on one meetings with them to go over raw datasets, help with trouble shooting and experimental design and facilitate analyzing data. This mentorship will also be extended to undergraduate and high school students who intern or visit the lab.

3.      Publications – Essential (15%): To draft manuscripts for publication in reputable peer-reviewed scientific journals and to present work at local, national and/or international conferences.

4.      Grants – Essential (15%): To work closely with PI on developing research grant proposals for the laboratory and to apply for postdoctoral fellowship awards from the NIH, foundations, and/or from other internal or external sources of funding.

5.      Documentation – Essential (10%): To maintain accurate and up-to-date laboratory records. This includes inputting data into our electronic laboratory notebooks (LabArchives and Box) for all Norris lab investigators to access within the confines of MUSC.

(Continuous) Ability to see and recognize objects close at hand. (Continuous) Ability to see and recognize objects at a distance. (Continuous) Ability to match or discriminate between colors. (Continuous) Ability to determine distance/relationship between objects; depth perception. (Continuous) Good peripheral vision capabilities. (Continuous) Ability to maintain hearing acuity, with correction. (Continuous) Ability to perform gross motor functions with frequent fine motor movements. (Continuous) Ability to be qualified physically (by medical personnel) for respirator use, initially and annually. Ability to work alone in isolated areas, such as darkrooms. (Frequent) Additional New Requirements: Ability to obtain and maintain a valid drivers license. Computer literacy. Ability to work rotating shifts as required. Ability to work overtime as required. Ability to learn and use new processes, tools and equipment as required.
