GENERAL PURPOSE OF JOB:
The Dialysis RN is a professional caregiver who assumes responsibility for patients and provides care to these patients via therapeutic use of self, nursing process, environment or instrumentation, and other health care team members. He/She may also function as a Charge Nurse in the Dialysis Unit and is accountable to the unit supervisor.

  • Demonstrates business practices and personal actions that are ethical and adhere to corporate compliance and integrity guidelines.
  • Maintains utmost level of confidentiality at all times.

  • Compliance with state/federal regulations.
  • Compliance with Texas Department of Health regulations relating to dialysis services and patient care.
  • Maintains competency in Hemodialysis, Peritoneal Dialysis, Therapeutic Plasma Exchange, and Aqua pheresis.
  • Maintain effective working relationships.
  • Maintains awareness of staffing and schedule flexibility.
  • Adhere to communication mechanism for use with all staff and physicians.
  • Attend staff meetings to keep informed.
  • Attend Injury Prevention and Safety training program.
  • Facilitate communication between all members of the health care team.
  • Assist in the management of equipment and supplies.
  • Perform outpatient and acute dialysis (hemodialysis & peritoneal) and therapeutic plasma exchange.
  • Assist with 24 hours on call for the dialysis unit.
  • Prepare clinical equipment for dialysis per procedure.
  • Ensure equipment meet state and federal guideline for safety and proper operation.
  • Assess and reassess patient condition and progress.
  • Evaluates patient status and responses to interventions and treatment.
  • Assess, implement, and evaluate patient/family learning needs.
  • Ensure that regular quality and control and cleaning is performed on all equipment as appropriate.
  • Adheres to unit policies and procedures.
  • Assist in tracking of maintenance and problem log for all equipment
  • Assist in the documentation of patient medical records.
  • Participates in Quality Management activities.
  • Participate in planning nursing care for patients.
  • Evaluate new equipment and supplies related to advanced technologies.
  • Assist with community events annually, for example renal camp.
  • Attend appropriate in-service with staff and physicians on new equipment and supplies.
  • Develop innovative ways to utilize existing resources safely and effectively.
  • Integrate and promote department/service, professional practice, and unit goals into practice.
  • Pursue educational and leadership opportunities to enhance professional growth and clinical expertise.
  • Establishes professional goals annually.
  • Periodically review own goals and revises according to changing needs.
  • Attends professional development opportunities offered within the organization.
  • Remain current in health care policies and practices.
  • Remain current in clinical and educational areas by reading professional journals and attending seminars and professional meetings.
  • Network with other health care professionals.
  • Attend continuing education.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing education.
  • Associate’s degree required.
  • Minimum of two years experience in dialysis.
  • Maintains BLS certification.
  • Maintains PALS certification
  • National certification within 2 years of hire.
