Job Description - VIce President - Project Management

The Vice President – Project Management leads the performance, development, and commercial success of the Project Management Department. This role is responsible for developing Project Managers who demonstrate strong project management, client stewardship, collaboration, KPI performance, and sales capability while achieving the department’s annual growth objectives.

The Vice President is accountable for team performance and development without assuming the routine project-management responsibilities of individual PMs.

Essential Responsibilities

Team Leadership & Development

  • Lead, coach, and evaluate the Project Management team.
  • Establish clear expectations, performance goals, and individual development plans.
  • Develop PM capabilities in project management, client relationships, sales, estimating, financial management, contract management, collaboration, and leadership.
  • Identify performance or capability gaps and implement measurable development or improvement plans.
  • Build a collaborative team culture focused on shared clients, pursuits, market opportunities, and department results.

Sales & Market Strategy

  • Own achievement of the Project Management team’s annual sales goal.
  • Translate annual objectives into quarterly and monthly sales plans, pipeline expectations, account strategies, and pursuit priorities.
  • Develop and manage market-segment plans, including targets, PM ownership, priority clients, and business-development activities.
  • Monitor performance and implement corrective strategies when sales, pipeline, or market-segment results fall behind plan.
  • Support sustainable growth through existing-client development, cross-selling, strategic relationships, and new-client acquisition.

Strategic Clients & Pursuits

  • Provide executive support for strategic clients, complex opportunities, and pursuits with anticipated project fees exceeding $500,000.
  • Guide pursuit strategy, positioning, client intelligence, teaming, differentiators, and go/no-go decisions.
  • Participate in major client meetings, interviews, negotiations, and recovery efforts when executive involvement is appropriate.
  • Coordinate technical, operational, estimating, and executive resources for critical pursuits while maintaining the PM as the primary project/client owner.

Performance Management

  • Administer the Individual Contribution Score (ICS) and Project Manager KPI process.
  • Conduct monthly performance check-ins and quarterly KPI/ICS reviews using objective, documented performance information.
  • Use performance results to guide coaching, improvement plans, recognition, and recommendations for tier advancement, promotion, or demotion.
  • Maintain consistent performance standards across the department.

Performance Measures

Success will be measured by:

  • Achievement and quarterly progress toward the department’s annual sales goal.
  • Market-segment growth and pipeline health.
  • PM performance and development under established ICS/KPI measures.
  • Development of PM capabilities and readiness for increased responsibility.
  • Strategic-client growth and execution of critical pursuits.
  • Timely corrective action when performance falls below plan.
  • Collaboration and shared accountability across the Project Management team.


Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Senior leadership experience managing professionals responsible for revenue growth, client relationships, and project or service delivery.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate revenue objectives into actionable team plans, market strategies, pipeline expectations, and individual accountability.
  • Experience coaching and developing project managers, account leaders, seller-doers, or comparable professional-services staff.
  • Experience leading strategic pursuits, major client relationships, presentations, negotiations, or complex business-development initiatives.
  • Strong analytical, communication, planning, organizational, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to evaluate performance, identify gaps, implement corrective actions, and hold team members accountable.
  • Ability to travel throughout Northern California as required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, engineering, construction management, marketing, or a related field is preferred. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Leadership experience in architecture, engineering, construction, geotechnical/environmental consulting, special inspection/materials testing, or a related professional-services environment.
  • Experience leading teams responsible for both project delivery and client development.
  • Experience with KPI-based performance management, account and market planning, CRM/pipeline management, and quarterly business reviews.
  • Experience growing existing accounts and coordinating cross-selling across multiple service lines.
