Organizational Summary:

The department currently has 16 full-time faculty, 1 Assistant Professor of Instruction, and 4 emeriti faculty.  The department offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in chemical engineering and an M.S. in Materials Science and Engineering. In addition to strong collaborations with colleagues from across the College of Engineering, faculty members in the department enjoy collaborations with several research centers on campus (e.g., the Clean Energy Research Center, the Institute of Applied Engineering, and the Nanotechnology Research and Education Center).  Faculty members in the department also have collaborations with the extensive medical enterprise at USF including the USF Morsani College of Medicine, H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute (an NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center), the Center for Assistive Rehabilitation Robotics and Technologies, the USF Heart Institute, and the USF Health Byrd Alzheimer’s Institute.  Detailed information about the department can be found at http://chbme.eng.usf.edu.       

Established in 1964 and currently led by Dean Levi Thompson, the College of Engineering at the University of South Florida is ranked #56 among public institutions (#89 overall) by U.S. News & World Report’s 2025-2026 engineering graduate school rankings. The college serves more than 3,500 students, offering 7 bachelor’s programs which are ABET-accredited, as well as 9 master’s and 7 doctoral degrees. The college is actively engaged in local and global research activities with $46 million in research expenditures for the fiscal year 2024-2025. The college has 12 major research centers and institutes and is actively engaged in local and global research activities focused on sustainability, biomedical engineering, computing technology and transportation.

 



Responsibilities

Position Summary:

Applications are invited for a full-time, non-tenure earning, 12-month Visiting Assistant Instructor position in the Department of Chemical, Biological, and Materials Engineering. Successful candidates are expected to start teaching courses in Spring semester of 2027. This is a one-year visiting appointment with the possibility of renewal for a second-year contingent upon satisfactory performance, departmental needs, and the availability of funds.

The successful candidate will be able to effectively teach courses at the undergraduate level in the department, both in-person and online, and will be expected to perform some undergraduate student advising and mentoring as well as assist with curriculum development, capstone design, ABET accreditation, and service to the department/college/university.  Special emphasis is on candidates who will have the capability to teach laboratory courses in the undergraduate Chemical Engineering degree program. The anticipated teaching load is three to four courses per semester, depending on course assignments, laboratory responsibilities, and departmental needs. Candidates are expected to have excellent communication skills, be able to work effectively in teams, integrate education and service activities. Salary is negotiable.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • M.S. in Chemical Engineering or closely related engineering discipline from an accredited institution.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph. D. Degree in Chemical Engineering or closely related engineering discipline from an accredited institution
  • Candidates should have some teaching experience in a US university
  • Candidate should have experience in setting up and running engineering teaching laboratory experiments
  • Candidate should have a record of developing and implementing innovative educational approaches. 
  • Candidate should have some industrial experience.
