WIC Lab Technician

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

1. Performs laboratory and anthropometric procedures required for WIC certifications following MDCH/OSHA protocol: height, weight, head circumference, hemoglobin, and blood lead. Is responsible for completing and documenting the Quality Control measures required for the hematological procedures. (25%)


2. Enters collected data and lead results into both MIWIC and GLBHC’s Electronic Medical Record system. Completes all necessary documents for lead samples and mails completed lead forms to appropriate sites. (20%)


3. Accesses MCIR and retrieves immunizations and lead status information for client’s certification. Prints MCIR reports for certifications or as requested by staff and clients. (10%)


4. Answers telephones courteously and determines whether to redirect call or handle immediately. Schedules appointments. (10%)


5. Assists receptionists in maintaining clinic flow by: (10%)
   
   
   
   • Greeting clients and activating records in MIWIC.
   
   
   • Generating benefits and issuing shopping lists.
   
   
   • Collecting demographic data and entering into MIWIC.
   
   
   • Making reminder phone calls
   
   
   
   


6. Maintains supply of program materials and lab supplies.  Keeps a well-stocked work station. (5%)


7. Directs clients to nutritionist, dietitian or other health center staff. (5%)


8. Stays current on breastfeeding policy and encourages all WIC women to breastfeed. (5%)


9. If bilingual, translates for non-Spanish speaking providers. (5%)


10. Performs other duties as necessary to aid in Maintaining WIC caseload. such as Outreach and assisting with Project Fresh. (5%)

MARGINAL JOB DUTIES

1. Maintains a clean and uncluttered work area.


2. Performs other duties as assigned.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

1. Education: High school graduate or equivalent.


2. Licensure: N/A


3. Experience: N/A


4. Skills: Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred. Must be organized and efficient in work habits.


5. Interpersonal Skills: Must demonstrate interest in health and nutrition and in the population served. Able to work and communicate effectively with a diverse population, including a wide age range.


6. Physical Effort: Must be able to sit, stand, and or walk for an entire workday. Must be able to lift, carry, push, pull, and or twist while holding up to 25 lbs. occasionally.


7. Hours of Work: Full-time: Monday through Friday.  Some evenings during migrant season. Part-time or seasonal:  Monday through Friday, some evenings during migrant season.  Flexible and varied.


8. Travel: Some travel may be required within the project service area. Reimbursement consistent with GLBHC policy.
