First Year Success Captain
First Year Success Leaders are a vital part of what makes the First Year Experience program successful. The First Year Success Captain plays a critical role in the success of the program by being embedded in FS 102 course sections as a leader that enhances the classroom experience for both instructors and students while also serving as the sole captain for First Year Success Leaders. The First Year Success Captain leads with dependability, experience, insight, connection, and a mentorship mindset.
Responsibilities and Career Competencies:
Attend and actively participate in all assigned First-Year Seminar class sessions (C).
Assist the instructor with planning and implementing class activities and discussions (CT, EI, TW).
Serve as a positive role model by demonstrating professional behavior and student engagement (L, P).
Build relationships with students to promote a sense of belonging and community (C, EI, P).
Offer peer support and guidance to first-year students with academic and personal concerns (CSD, C, CT).
Facilitate small group discussions and activities to enhance student interaction (CSD, C, CT, L).
Provide information on campus resources such as academic advising, tutoring, wellness services, and student organizations (C, L, T).
Refer students to appropriate support services as needed (CT, L).
Maintain regular communication with students outside of class via email, office hours, or scheduled check-ins and keep a contact log (CSD, C, T).
Collaborate with the instructor to identify and respond to student needs or concerns (C, TW).
Attend required training sessions before the semester begins and participate in ongoing development workshops (CSD, P, L).
Meet regularly with the instructor and peer mentor team for planning and reflection (C, TW, T).
