Job Summary:

This is a flexible position caring for rodents (mice and rats), small birds, insects and other invertebrates kept in animal care facilities on campus. The position requires responsible and reliable employees to clean cages, handle animals and insects as a part of weekly cleanings, mop, sweep, keep accurate records, and note any "off" or concerning animal welfare behaviors. The animals on campus are important to the campus research community, and their welfare is of the highest concern. Animals remain on campus for weekends, holidays, and academic breaks, therefore care continues through these times. Employee availability to work weekends, holidays and academic breaks is preferred.

Starting compensation begins at $10.50 w/ $0.50 raises each semester of employment as an Animal Care Technician. Work Study is preferred but not necessary.

As mentioned, this position is flexible. Employees work 5-10 hours per week with rotating weekends once or twice a month depending on employee availability. Two - Four hour shifts must be completed within a 12 hour period on the scheduled day. So, if a student's best day (most open day of the week) is a Tuesday. They will likely be scheduled to do set tasks that may take 2 - 4 hours to complete, any time between 8 AM - 8 PM every Tues. during the semester and assigned to water/feed/check on animals one weekend each month. More hours to work is optional depending on consistent availability. This position works well with class requirements, student org. interests and other employment. It also fulfills requirements for obtaining professional animal care experience.

Must have (any type of) animal care & handling experience and be comfortable with handling rodents and small birds.

May need to lift 35 - 40 lb. bags of food & bedding.

Must be able to work alone and independently

Must have reliable transportation to campus. Living on campus or in the greater Stevens Point community is preferred.

Training is provided.
