PRIMARY PURPOSE:

The Student Developer position is a maximum of 20 hours per week. The hours are flexible to fit your school schedule. 

Our philosophy is to rapidly develop prototypes for faculty, students, and staff in order to introduce them to new technologies and determine whether these technologies will be able to meet their needs, meaning this position often involves researching and trying out new technologies. Therefore, we prioritize a more generalized approach to development rather than investment in particular frameworks and products, and we value ability to learn and experiment over experience in our employees.

Responsibilities

About the position

The Advanced Visualization Center (AVC) is looking to hire a student for software development. We are looking
specifically for sophomores or younger. As a student developer working at the AVC, you will be tasked with creating a wide variety of applications, as well as general technical tasks related to advanced technologies. Previous projects include:

  • Full stack websites
  • d3.js data visualizations
  • Python web scraping and data processing
  • Unity AR and VR applications
  • Mobile App Development for Android and iOS
  • Computer vision
  • AI model use and training
  • Microcontrollers
  • Working with 3D models and related content
  • Setting up and managing multiple VR headset

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Basic programming knowledge and aptitude 
  • Ability and willingness to work collaboratively 
  • Ability to work independently to research, explore, and learn new technologies 
  • Ability to organize and communicate development processes and project requirements 
  • Ability to work within deadlines and produce working prototypes on short time-frames 
  • No prior software development experience necessary, though applicants are expected to be comfortable in basic programming. 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • All of the above, plus: 
  • Experience working with version control (primarily Git) 
  • Adobe Suite (Photoshop, Premiere, etc.) experience 
  • Graphic Design experience 
  • 3D Modeling / Animation experience 
  • Experience with finding or training custom AI models
