Description

The Children’s Home of Pittsburgh is seeking an intern to support the development of our next Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA). Conducted every three years, the CHNA provides an opportunity to engage community members, families, healthcare providers, nonprofit organizations, and other stakeholders to identify and better understand the most pressing health and social needs affecting children and families in our community.

Working approximately 10 hours per week with the expectation to come into the office once a week, the CHNA Intern will support all phases of the assessment process, including research, survey development and distribution, stakeholder engagement, data collection and analysis, and preparation of the final written CHNA.

This internship provides an opportunity to gain practical experience in community health assessment, nonprofit administration, research, data analysis, stakeholder engagement, and professional report writing while contributing to a project that will guide future programs and investments at The Children’s Home of Pittsburgh.

  

Community Research & Data Collection

  • Conduct research on health and social issues affecting children and families in Allegheny County and the surrounding region.
  • Identify and compile relevant secondary data from public health agencies, government sources, healthcare organizations, and other reputable sources.
  • Assist with identifying demographic, health, economic, and social trends relevant to the CHNA.

Survey Development & Distribution

  • Assist with the development and refinement of the community health needs survey.
  • Help ensure survey questions are clear, accessible, and aligned with the goals of the CHNA.
  • Develop and maintain a survey distribution plan designed to reach a broad range of community members and stakeholders.
  • Identify community organizations, healthcare providers, educational institutions, service providers, and other partners that can assist with survey distribution.
  • Draft outreach materials, emails, and other communications encouraging community participation.

Stakeholder Council Coordination

  • Assist with coordinating The Children’s Home’s CHNA Stakeholder Council, including representatives from community organizations, healthcare providers, educational institutions, families, and other community partners.
  • Coordinate meeting scheduling, invitations, agendas, materials, and follow-up communications.
  • Attend Stakeholder Council meetings and document key themes, recommendations, and feedback.

Data Analysis & Identification of Community Needs

  • Organize and analyze quantitative survey results to identify significant trends and areas of community concern.
  • Review qualitative survey responses and stakeholder feedback to identify recurring themes.
  • Assist with comparing primary data collected through the CHNA with relevant local, regional, and state-level secondary data.
  • Develop tables, charts, summaries, and other materials to communicate findings.
  • Support staff and the Stakeholder Council in identifying and prioritizing significant community health needs.

CHNA Writing & Publication

  • Draft sections of the CHNA related to methodology, community demographics, data collection, survey findings, stakeholder engagement, and identified community health needs.
  • Assist with proofreading, editing, factchecking, citations, and preparation of the final report.

Requirements

  

  1. Current  undergraduate or graduate student in public health, social work, public policy, healthcare administration, nonprofit management, sociology, communications, research, or a related field.
  2. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  3. Comfortable conducting online research and synthesizing information from multiple sources.
  4. Proficiency with Microsoft Office or similar productivity software.
  5. Interest in community health, children and families, nonprofit organizations, or health and human services.
