Configuration Management Intern - Fall 2026

Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is is seeking an intern to support the Infrastructure Transformation Program by researching and preserving historical site infrastructure. The role involves reviewing original construction plans from early US Navy and National Reactor Testing Station operations, locating and documenting former building sites and utilities, and interpreting civil engineering drawings. The intern will digitize historical materials into EDMS for long-term accessibility and collaborate with the team to verify findings.

This team works a 9x80 schedule onsite at our Idaho Falls Campus. You will also travel between INL facilities.  Start date and duration of internship vary based on project and student availability. You may be eligible for course credit for this internship.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Undergraduate student majoring in either Civil, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering majors 
• Minimum Overall GPA Requirement: 3.0
• Authorization to work in the U.S. (including CPT and OPT)
• Current Resume or CV
• Unofficial Transcripts (include current and completed degree programs)
• Current class schedule and number of credits

Key Responsibilities:

• Conduct research on original construction plans from the US Navy (1943-1949) and the National Reactor Testing Station (1949-2005).
• Locate and identify originally constructed building locations and underground utilities that are no longer visible, decommissioned, or abandoned in place.
• Interpret civil engineering drawings, with a focus on the original installation of utilities and buildings.
• Digitally preserve historical drawings by scanning them into the Electronic Document Management System (EDMS) to ensure easy access for INL employees.
• Collaborate with team members to validate findings and ensure the accuracy of documentation.

Compensation:

• Undergraduate Internships ($29.39/hour - $32.41/hour)

Physical Requirements: 

The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, bend, operate a computer keyboard or type, handle materials, or reach with hands and arms performing the essential functions of the classification. The duties require sitting for long periods. The employee must occasionally lift 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this classification include close vision, distance vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus, conduct research and inspect materials. Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing abilities required by this classification includes those which permit the employee to discern verbal instructions, communicate effectively in person, by telephone or electronic mail. While performing the duties of this classification, the employee works in an office setting where the noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
