Dudley Promise Corps (AmeriCorps, One-Year)

Dudley Promise Corps is a full-time AmeriCorps service program launched by BPE in 2013 with the mission of increasing student engagement in order to ensure students in Boston are on track to attend college and become responsible citizens who serve their community. Dudley Promise Corps members serve together in BPE’s Teaching Academies-- Dudley School Neighborhood Charter School (grades PreK-5) and Dearborn STEM Academy (grades 6-12), both Boston Public Schools. DPC members provide individual, classroom, and whole-school support and lead enrichment programming. 

To achieve this, DPC is driven by ambitious goals in five focus areas. DPC members share specific responsibilities in each area, both individually and as a team, as outlined below:

• Academic Support—DPC members accelerate the academic growth and achievement of the students we serve. Corps members at the Dearborn STEM Academy use supplementary curricula to provide 1:1 and small group academic support in literacy to middle school students. Corps members at the Dudley Street Neighborhood Charter School support the goal of 3rd grade reading proficiency for all students by providing 1:1 literacy support to 5-10 target students on a regular basis.
• Relationships— To promote student engagement and provide effective academic support, DPC members build authentic relationships with students and serve in an informal mentoring capacity. Since they are embedded in the school, corps members are able to spend non-academic time each day getting to know students in a range of settings and ensuring that each student is known and appreciated.
• School Culture—DPC members collaborate with school staff to build whole-school community and a culture that promotes high levels of student engagement and investment. They lead or support opportunities to expand learning through age-appropriate enrichment programming one afternoon per week. They share in the responsibility of supporting non-academic duties essential in building school culture-- breakfast, lunch, recess, and dismissal. And they support and organize school-based events.
• Community Engagement— As a neighborhood based corps, DPC members learn about the Dudley community history, assets, and aspirations, and engage with community partners through multi-faceted experiences outside of schools. DPC believes that this connection facilitates an understanding that allows members to better serve students.
• Member Development— DPC members engage in regular professional development opportunities. In addition to receiving the training and support necessary to perform their responsibilities in schools, DPC members gain knowledge, skills, and experiences that empower them to continue working towards social justice and equity, and remain engaged leaders in their communities long after their service year.

• Be at least 17 years of age 
• Hold a high school diploma or GED by the start of the program
• Be a citizen or legal permanent resident
  
• Great for recent college grads
