The Nurse Extern, is currently enrolled in a School of Nursing and has successfully completed a Nursing fundamentals course. When on duty, s/he assists patients with activities of daily living and provides basic patient care designed to meet the physical, emotional and social needs of the patient. The Nurse Extern may also be cross-trained to perform unit secretary clerical duties. The nurse Extern may perform nursing practice interventions learned within his/her clinical training and successfully validated by a RN staff member.
The Nurse Extern role is designed to provide expanded clinical experience for senior professional (RN) nursing students and to assist the Registered Nursing staff by performing patient care activities, which includes participating inpatient care planning, implementation, observation, and evaluation, as well as reporting significant observations to a Registered Nurse. In the level II, the Nurse Extern will have a 1:1 preceptorship with a Registered Nurse.
Education:
Required: Currently enrolled in an accredited RN program and successfully entered their senior year in an accredited school of nursing and must pass all senior courses to remain in the program.
Certification:
Required: AHA BLS.
