Job Description - Graduate Assistant, Strength and Conditioning

Under the general direction of the Director of Strength and Conditioning, the Graduate Assistant for Strength and Conditioning develops and implements sports performance programs for student-athletes to enhance their strength, power, speed, and agility while ensuring a holistic approach to health and safety.


Essential Duties include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.


Education/Coaching (50%)



  • Design and implement strength and conditioning programs for assigned teams.

  • Educate student-athletes and coaches on proper techniques and safety standards.

  • Establish and enforce rules and regulations for the performance facility.

  • Collaborate with the sports medicine department to mitigate injury risk and assist with rehabilitation programming.


Administrative (50%)



  • Assist with recruiting, supervising, and instructing strength and conditioning interns and/or graduate assistants;

  • Perform administrative duties related to facility maintenance and scheduling;

  • Attend mandatory athletic staff meetings and represent the department at selected home athletic contests;

  • Perform duties as game manager at select games throughout the year.


Qualifications


Candidates must have strong organizational skills and a proven ability to work collaboratively with partners across campus in support of Hood College’s mission as a student-centered, liberal arts institution.

  • Proven integrity, leadership, and a thorough knowledge of field hockey are required.

  • Candidate should possess a strong commitment and ability to motivate, teach, counsel, and recruit academically qualified student-athletes.

  • Must have valid driver’s license.


Education



  • Bachelor’s degree and full acceptance into one of the Hood College’s graduate programs required.

  • Proven successful coaching or playing, with 2-3 years' experience preferred, preferably at the collegiate level or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Knowledge of NCAA Division III rules and regulations preferred.

  • Must maintain a 3.00 cumulative GPA while enrolled in graduate program.


Technology Skills



  • Computer proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.

  • Proficient with the internet and email.

  • Ability to learn new applications quickly including organization-wide information systems and department-specific software applications.


Language Skills



  • Ability to read and interpret medical documents and NCAA guidelines.

  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of students, parents or others.

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

  • Ability to effectively provide information and positively respond to questions from both external and internal customers both in person and by phone.

  • Ability to develop marketing or promotion materials.


Mathematical Skills



  • Ability to work with and apply mathematical concepts timely and accurately, manually by using a calculator which apply to athletic trainers.

  • Ability to apply concepts to practical situations.


Reasoning Ability



  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

  • Ability to hypothesize, draw conclusions, and support conclusions.

  • Ability to work in theoretical arena and apply logic as appropriate.


Compensation


The compensation for Athletic Graduate Assistants consists of a $3,000 annual stipend, a tuition waiver for up to 18 credits per year, campus housing, and a meal plan. This temporary position is not benefits-eligible except for paid Maryland sick leave. Learn more about Hood College.
