Industrial Engineer Intern- Summer 2027

Reader Precision Solutions (RPS) in Elkhorn, WI is seeking a motivated college student to join our team as an Industrial Engineering Intern for Summer 2027. This internship provides hands-on experience applying industrial engineering concepts within a precision manufacturing environment, with an emphasis on continuous improvement, process efficiency, ergonomics, and manufacturing operations.

The intern will work alongside Engineering, Production, and other areas of the business to evaluate processes, identify improvement opportunities, and develop practical solutions. The internship will also include exposure to production operations and the opportunity to complete meaningful projects that make a measurable impact on the organization. 

Schedule: This position will be 40 hours a week, 6:30am – 3:00 pm  Monday – Friday. 

Pay Rate: $22.00 per hour

Essential Duties & Responsibilities include but are not limited to:  

• Utilize Lean Six Sigma tools and continuous improvement principles to evaluate and improve processes. 
• Develop and utilize value stream maps to analyze part and process flow. 
• Design and improve work cells with a focus on efficiency and ergonomics. 
• Develop and update work instructions to support consistent and streamlined operations. 
• Conduct time studies and analyze processes to identify opportunities for improved efficiency. 
• Collaborate with manufacturing employees and leaders to troubleshoot production challenges. 
• Develop and refine processes related to part handling and movement. 
• Utilize CAD software to create designs and drawings supporting process improvements. 
• Assist with identifying and implementing improvements to manufacturing equipment and processes. 
• Support quality and process improvements to help ensure components are produced to established standards. 
• Communicate improvement ideas and collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement solutions. 
• Participate in a variety of engineering and continuous improvement projects throughout the organization. 
• Complete an internship project and present findings, recommendations, and results to the Engineering team. 

• Currently pursuing a degree in Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering field. 
• Basic knowledge of Lean manufacturing, continuous improvement, and/or Lean Six Sigma principles preferred. 
• Familiarity with process mapping, value stream mapping, time studies, or other process improvement tools preferred. 
• Experience or coursework involving CAD software preferred. 
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. 
• Ability to collect, organize, and analyze information to identify improvement      opportunities. 
• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills. 
• Effective verbal and written communication skills. 
• Ability to work collaboratively with employees across Engineering, Production, and other departments. 
• Self-motivated, dependable, curious, and eager to learn.

• The incumbent will work in both office and manufacturing environments. 
• In the office, the incumbent will utilize a computer, telephone, and other office equipment as needed to perform assigned duties. 
• While working in the manufacturing environment, the incumbent may be exposed to machinery, manufacturing noise, oils/coolants, and other conditions typical of a precision machining facility. 
• The position regularly requires sitting, standing, walking, talking, and listening. 
• Frequently requires repetitive hand motion, fine motor skills, reaching, and bending.      
• May  occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. 
• Must be able to safely navigate a manufacturing environment and comply with      required safety practices and personal protective equipment (PPE)      requirements.
