Job Description - Intern

Brookings Institution | Metropolitan Policy Program

Fall 2012 Internship Program

General Information

The Metropolitan Policy Program (Metro) is offering fall internships for qualified candidates. Fall interns typically work 20-40 hours a week, depending on the Program’s needs and the intern’s availability. Interns provide research and administrative support for Metro’s current projects and day-to-day office functions.

Undergraduate students (especially upperclassmen), graduate students, and recent college graduates majoring in public policy, urban policy, economics, statistics/mathematics, or other social sciences – or related fields – are encouraged to apply. Our most successful applicants balance high-level quantitative research proficiency with strong writing skills, as demonstrated through previous research experience.

Experience with Excel, ArcGIS, SAS, STATA and/or Access are strongly valued, but not required.

Metro also offers a communications internship for an individual interested in communications, public relations, or journalism and how these fields relate to advancing the Metro Program’s impact. Duties typically include: pitching stories; outreach events such as press conferences, forums, and policy roundtables; maintaining press contacts/lists; and compiling clip reports.

Please note that all positions are unpaid. The fall internships period runs from September through December.

How to Apply

To apply for an internship, please send a cover letter indicating your availability (approximate number of hours per week available to work and approximate start and end dates), resume, and brief (no more than three page) writing sample.

In the cover letter, please also discuss specifically why you are interested in an internship with the Metropolitan Policy Program and highlight the quantitative skills mentioned above. Send all materials to [email protected]. Incomplete submission will not be considered.

Applications are processed on a rolling basis until all available positions are filled, so early application is encouraged. It is unlikely that we will be able to consider applications received later than August 24, 2012.

No phone calls please. Only those candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
