As a Summer Intern for the Capacity Planning team, students will engage on high-impact projects that use data, modeling, and financial analysis to guide the future growth and investment decisions of the BNSF network. The Capacity Planning team evaluates current and future network performance, identifies infrastructure constraints, and collaborates with other BNSF teams (Engineering Services, Finance, Network & Field Operations, Economic Development, Marketing and Network Strategy) to develop plans for expansion projects. Successful Interns may be hired as full-time Management Trainees upon graduation.


 


This is a full-time, hybrid position requiring a minimum of 40 hrs/wk, split between the office and remote work, with weekend or evening work as needed.   


Travel is minimal, must have reliable transportation to and from work.    


Relocation is required if located more than 50 miles from the location.   


Training will start with a two-day orientation in Fort Worth, Texas, offering a company overview and networking with leaders. This will be followed by support on ongoing projects and practical training with the department.    


 


Key responsibilities may include: 


Analyzing corridor, terminal, and hub operations to identify capacity constraints and opportunities for improvement.


Developing analytical models and simulations tools to evaluate the impact of infrastructure changes.


Collaborating across BNSF with team members from Engineering Services, Finance, Network & Field Operations, Economic Development, Marketing and Network Strategy to develop and prioritize investment options


Creating presentations, visualizations, and recommendations for leaders to support operational and capital planning decisions.


Exploring novel approaches to capacity modeling utilizing Artificial Intelligence tools

Basic Qualifications:



  • Legally authorized to work in the United States and will be at least eighteen (18) years old upon hire.

  • Does not require BNSF’s assistance, now or in the future, (whether monetary, through sponsorship, or otherwise) to obtain, maintain, or extend employment authorization (including H-1B, STEM OPT/CPT, or TN nonimmigrant status). 

  • Pursuing a Bachelors or Graduate degree in Industrial Engineering, Operations Research, Supply Chain Management, Data Science, Computer Science or a similar degree program from an accredited university.

  • Have and will maintain at least a 2.75 cumulative GPA.

  • Have LESS THAN three (3) years of professional work experience/military experience, EXCLUDING internships, part-time jobs, or positions held while pursuing my undergraduate and/or graduate degree. 

  • Have access to reliable transportation for the duration of the internship to and from my assigned BNSF location.


 


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Prior intern experience or less than 3 years of work experience involving operations research, simulation, data analytics or related discipline.

  • Have and will maintain at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA

  • Have or have held a leadership position in a campus, community, or extracurricular organization.


 


Targeted Technical Skillsets:



  • Familiarity with SQL, Python, Databricks, SAS, Tableau or other analytical/visualization tools

  • Experience with simulation including use of AnyLogic

  • Experience with supervised machine learning techniques

  • Use of ClaudeCode
