Job Description - Neuro Physical Therapy Resident

Your job is more than a job.

The Neuro Physical Therapy Resident is responsible for working with a multidisciplinary health care team to coordinate goals and achieve optimal outcomes for patients across multiple settings of rehabilitation including acute care, inpatient rehab and outpatient. The Neuro Physical Therapy Resident provides evaluations and administers treatment procedures to patients referred to physical therapy, directs and guides patient/family teaching and provides oversight for ancillary personnel while maintaining professional standards. The Physical Therapy Resident is responsible for completing all didactic and clinical residency hours and requirements as dictated by the American Board of Physical Therapy Residency and Fellowship Education.

General Duties:

  • Demonstrates skill and accuracy in performing age-appropriate assessments of a diverse range of patient diagnosis and complexity and documents evaluation in EMR timely. Re-assesses and revises goals and treatment plan as indicated by patient’s status, program requirements, and CMS rules and regulations. Evaluates patient progress toward expected outcomes and documents accordingly including outcomes measures and response to treatment. Plans and implements age-appropriate patient care and activities consistent with the medical plan of care of each patient, including discharge planning. Collaborates with physicians regarding service needs as well as other members of the healthcare team to provide safe and effective patient care.
  • Provides education and training to patient and family members to optimize outcomes and patient safety. Provides education to the patient and family as well as the healthcare team on the role of physical therapy.
  • Keeps daily statistics and charges as established for each area. Contributes to department Quality Management activities providing recommendations for systematic and programmatic improvements based upon the results of the data. Documents results of standardized assessments and acts as a resource to Program Managers and Directors for achievement of standards for accreditation by CARF, Commission on Cancer, and/or other accrediting organizations.
  • Provides guidance to new and experienced personnel and performs residency requirements as assigned. Assignments including educational presentations and in-services to patients and staff.
  • Communicates effectively to provide optimal care to the patient and to promote a professional climate throughout the hospital. Participates in team conferences, town halls, program, and discipline specific meetings.
  • Achieve passing score on midterm and final clinical competencies and didactic assessments. Complete a written case study and presentation.
  • Apply a process of ongoing self-evaluation and personal performance improvement. Regularly integrates new learning into subsequent performances of a task until expectations are met.

Education Qualifications

  • Required: Graduate of a CAPTE accredited Doctor of Physical Therapy Program

Licenses and Certifications

  • Licensed as a Physical Therapist by the Louisiana Physical Therapy Board, provisional license allowed at time of application. Must have permanent license by November of year of hire to remain in residency program and maintain employment.
  • American Heart Association, Basic Life Support Health Care Provider

Required Memberships:

  • American Physical Therapy Association Member
  • Academy of Neurologic Physical Therapy Member
