Job Description - PTY Test Job 1

A Proctor serves as an in-residence counselor and leader for a group of 8-14 middle through high school students during Vanderbilt Summer Academy, a residential program on Vanderbilt campus that serves academically advanced students. Through leading creative and meaningful evening activities, facilitating daily team-building and intentionally cultivating community, Proctors are critical to enhancing the academic and social experience for students. This is a residential position that requires flexible weekend hours on Check-in/Check-out Days and during the weekends of program operation. 45-55 hours weekly is typical. Flexibility is essential in this position.

Expectations: 

Within their wide array of duties and responsibilities, VSA Proctors are expected to: 

  • Lead, supervise, continually check-in and support  a group of 8-14 students during each session. 
  • Be a role model for all student participants and colleagues. 
  • Uphold and exemplify community values, regulations, and expectations. 
  • Curate a safe, cordial, and supportive residential community for all students and staff. 
  • Co-create and implement age-appropriate and unforgettable recreational activities. 
  • Enthusiastically adapt and pivot as needed to ensure optimal, engaging, and safe student experiences.  
  • Collaborate with other Proctors to ensure a positive community culture. 
  • Remain in frequent communication with the leadership team regarding student well being and engagement. 
  • Assist with various administrative duties and processes to ensure smooth operations. 
  • Thrive in a fast-paced, demanding work environment that requires continuing flexibility, a positive and caring attitude, and collaboration. 
  • Adhere to PTY’s policies related to confidentiality.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


Requirements

Qualifications:  

The ideal candidate will:  

  • Be a current undergraduate or graduate student. 
  • Demonstrate exceptional maturity and character.  
  • Possess cultural sensitivity awareness and a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Have experience working with teenagers in a youth development setting. (Residential life/camp counseling experience a plus).  
  • Embody a strong team player ethic and sense of humor. 
  • Be able to successfully and positively communicate with individuals of all ages, experiences, and roles. 
  • Successfully pass the Vanderbilt University criminal background check and online training for working with minors.
  • Agree to adhere to all duties before, during, and after the program as outlined in the staff materials.
  • Must be able to traverse distances of at least one mile, including stairs, with or without accommodation.
  • Must be able to lift and/or maneuver at least 40 lbs. with or without accommodation.


Benefits

Compensation:

$12.00/hr (plus housing and meals while VSA is in session)

*This position is eligible for the returning PTY seasonal staff incentive.
**This position is eligible for the Master’s Degree/ Educator or Counselor Certification incentive.

Program Dates and Times:* 

  • Onsite Training: June 2 – June 6, 2025; June 16 – 17, 2025; July 5, 2025
  • VSA Sessions operating June-July 
    • VSA Session 1: June 8 – June 14, 2025
    • VSA Session 2: June 22 – June 28, 2025
    • VSA Session 3: July 6 – 19, 2025 
  • The typical standard weekday shift is 6:30am-8:30am and 3pm-11:00pm in addition to extensive weekend hours. Schedules may vary slightly depending on assigned session. Proctors work 1-2 hours each morning in supervising the residential halls as students wake up as well as escorting students to breakfast.
  • Please note, VSA requires all residential staff to live in the residence hall. This means all staff are expected to remain in the residence hall overnight for each and every night VSA is in session with the exception of agreed upon 24-hour time-off periods (applicable only to 2-week sessions). These 24-hour time off periods will be clearly communicated at the onset of each session; they will be different for each staff member in order to maintain the correct adult to student ratios that are in compliance with Vanderbilt University’s Protection of Minors policies.
