The NC Department of Administration is the business manager for North Carolina state government. Job Duties: The objective of this internship is to introduce and immerse the student into the regulatory concepts of solid waste and coal ash management in North Carolina and encourage student interest in careers in engineering, geology, and/or environmental science with State government
Major Task to be Performed: Travel with the solid waste staff to inspect coal ash and solid waste management facilities, structural fills, and processing facilities, prepare inspection and site visit documentation, attend planning meetings with the coal ash team, and assist in data entry. Shadow staff engineers and hydrogeologists in application and data review and in special projects.
Final Product or Outcome Anticipated: Completion of all assigned tasks including inspection reports, site visit reports, and data entry. Understand the needs of the Solid Waste Section and Coal Ash Team for competent engineers, geologists, and environmental scientists.

2026 State of North Carolina Internship Period: Monday, May 18 – Friday, July 24, 2026
Intern should be proficient in utilizing a computer for word processing, spreadsheets, email, database research, and research in general. The intern may be exposed to inclement weather, insects, snakes, poisonous plants, and heavy equipment traffic at construction sites and at landfills. This internship involves frequent walking.
This position will close at 11:59 p.m. the night before the end date.
