Have you ever pushed a door when you were supposed to pull it? Or felt stuck trying to figure
out what to do next in an application?
These moments are not accidents—they are the result of design decisions. This project is about
learning how to make better ones.
In this 8-week experience, interns will learn how to design and build applications using human-
centered design principles. Rather than starting with technology, features, or assumptions,
students will begin by understanding people—their goals, behaviors, and challenges—and use
those insights to guide every design decision.
To practice these methods, interns will work on designing a publications application for tracking
scientific outputs such as conference papers, journal articles, and workshop publications. This
application serves as a real-world case study through which students will apply user-centered
design techniques from concept to prototype.
The focus of this project is not just what gets built, but how and why it gets built.
Working as a small, cross-functional team, interns will:
• Conduct user research to uncover real needs and pain points
• Synthesize findings into insights, personas, and design requirements
• Explore multiple solutions before selecting a direction
• Build and test interactive prototypes
• Iterate based on feedback and usability evaluation
