The Summer Research Student will participate in a mentored research experience in the Department of Hematology. Under the supervision of laboratory staff, the student will gain exposure to functional genomics technologies, genomic data analysis, bioinformatics workflows, and scientific research practices. Responsibilities may include assisting with data generation and organization, conducting literature reviews, performing basic computational analyses, documenting research activities, and participating in laboratory meetings. This position provides hands-on experience in biomedical research and offers an opportunity to learn fundamental concepts in genomics, data science, and scientific communication.

The Summer Research Student will participate in a supervised research training experience within the Department of Hematology. The student will work closely with laboratory members on projects involving functional genomics, genome engineering, and computational analysis of genomic data. This position is designed to provide hands-on exposure to biomedical research and to introduce students to modern experimental and computational approaches used in genomics research.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the generation, organization, and management of experimental and genomic datasets.
  • Learn and apply basic bioinformatics and data analysis methods under supervision.
  • Conduct literature reviews and summarize scientific findings relevant to ongoing research projects.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of research activities, analyses, and results.
  • Participate in laboratory meetings, seminars, and research discussions.
  • Assist laboratory personnel with research-related tasks as assigned.
  • Prepare and present a summary of research activities at the conclusion of the training experience.

Qualifications:

  • Current high school, undergraduate, or early-stage college student with an interest in biology, genomics, computational biology, data science, or related disciplines.
  • Strong interest in scientific research and willingness to learn new concepts and techniques.
  • Good organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Basic computer skills required; prior experience with programming, data analysis, or biology coursework is beneficial but not required.
