Student - America Reads Tutor/Mentor

Description:

The America Reads program is a federally funded initiative that supports Federal Work Study-eligible undergraduate students who serve as reading tutors in their local communities. 

As an America Reads tutor, Ursinus College students provide reading, homework help, tutoring and college prep support to youth participants at CCATE – The Center for Culture, Arts, Work and Education, located 1246 W. Main St. Norristown, PA.

Responsibilities:

• Facilitate tutoring and homework help to elementary-, middle- and high-school aged youth


• Assist teachers in supporting formative small group classes


• Lead or co-lead dynamic clubs (e.g., chess, drawing, sports, or other student skills)


• Students Tutors will travel from Ursinus College to CCATE at 3:30pm and return to campus at 6:30pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and/or Thursdays, beginning mid-September 2026.


• America Reads Tutors/Mentors may work up to 16 hours each week. 

Requirements:

• Current full-time student at Ursinus College


• Complete a PA Child Abuse History Clearance and PA State Police Criminal Background Check


• Strong academic background in literacy, mathematics, science, or related fields


• Ability to work effectively with children in grades K-12


• Patience, creativity, and excellent communication skills


• Reliability, punctuality, and professionalism


• Have a commitment for inclusion and equity within the Ursinus community


• Be organized and responsible and willing to respect community partners


• Model sound judgment when traveling off campus
