The USA is home to millions of tons of coal ash, a product of coal power generation, that is enriched with higher than usual concentrations of rare earth elements (REEs) and other critical minerals and materials (CMMs). Argonne is currently involved in cutting-edge supply chain research, using optimization models and collaborating with partners to understand the cost and logistical implications of harvesting REEs and CMMs from this legacy waste
The successful intern will support an interdisciplinary team at Argonne working to unlock the potential of these new, unconventional resource systems. Tasks might include process modelling, cost estimation, computational analysis, and graphical support. The team welcomes the intern's specific interests and novel skillset to contribute to the effective development of this project.
This position provides an opportunity to gain significant research experience in the evolving field of unconventional resource development. This project is at the center of the new push to onshore supply chains and secure resources through innovative technical methods.
