Job Description - SULI EVS Chiquito, Jose 2.13.26

Our team has several projects focused on bioenergy crop production and the provision of ecosystem services (ES). Perennial bioenergy crops such as shrub willow, switchgrass, miscanthus, and other native prairie grass mixtures can be used as feedstock for biofuels [e.g., sustainable aviation fuel (SAF)] and bioproducts (e.g., biochar, erosion control socks, food containers). When grown on marginal land within agricultural landscapes, these crops can also provide ES such as improved water quality, biodiversity, carbon sequestration, and soil health, while reducing soil erosion and soil gas fluxes. We study the environmental and economic aspects of perennial crops through direct data collection (laboratory and field work) and modeling (e.g. developing machine learning models to predict ES and biomass yield). This summer we are looking to hire three students (if internship spots allow). The internship will be on-site at Argonne (9700 S. Cass Ave., Lemont, IL 60439), 40 hours/week. Tasks may vary depending on project needs and student interests, which may include: 1) Lab sample analysis (soils and soil gas fluxes from microbes and plant roots), 2) Data processing and analysis (soil organic matter, soil gases [nitrous oxide carbon dioxide, and methane]), 3) Literature reviews and database development, and 4) Overnight travel to southern Iowa for field work (soil gas flux sampling) may also be possible. Please visit our website: https://web.evs.anl.gov/bioenergy/ to learn more about our group.
