This research project aims to explore and understand novel behavior of nanoscale heterostructures from fundamental perspective as well as potential technological applications in next generation low power microelectronics devices. The materials will include magnetic thin films as well as van der Waals 2D materials. The goal will be to understand how heterogenous integration of these materials can lead to novel functionality. For example, magnetic excitations such as skyrmions and solitons can be used for information transfer as well as new neuromorphic computing applications. However, to understand and control the properties of these materials, it is critical to probe their behavior using high resolution imaging of magnetic domains. There are several projects available in the above-mentioned areas involving computational as well as experimental work including fabrication of multilayer thin films and characterizing their structural and magnetic properties, as well as use of nanofabrication to create devices.
