In this project, we will explore nonlinear spin wave engineering for future 5G and 6G wireless communications and high-bandwidth microelectronics. In particular, we will design, fabricate, and study magnetic thin-film based microwave devices, so called spin-wave delay lines, for high-performance and highly tunable microwave band-pass filters. Specifically, we will work on yttrium iron garnet (YIG) thin films grown epitaxially on Gadolinium gallium garnet (GGG) substrate, fabricate nanoscale coplanar waveguide electrodes, and conduct broad-band microwave transmission characterization of the devices. The project will also explore multiplexed microwave performance in the YIG delay line and cultivate the unique nonlinear property of spin waves for advanced functionality as microwave devices. The goal is to achieve broad-range and field-tunable spin wave transmission bandwidth along with low insertion loss, miniaturized dimension, and on-chip integration, while aiming for multiplexed operation with minimal cross-channel interference. These properties are highly designed for high-speed 6G communications.
Education and Experience Requirements
Currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate studies at an accredited
institution.
Graduated from an accredited institution within the past 3 months; or
Actively enrolled in a graduate program at an accredited institution.
Must be 18 years or older at the time the appointment begins.
Must possess a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
Must be a U.S. citizen or Legal Permanent Resident at the time of application.
If accepting an offer, must pass a screening drug test.
