The Tennis Specialist is responsible for providing campers ages three through thirteen how to play and improve their tennis skills. They will work with children of all skill levels while fostering a positive, fun, and motivating environment that helps campers develop confidence and enjoyment in the sport. This role is ideal for someone with a passion for tennis, a love for teaching, and a commitment to promoting athletic growth. The Tennis Specialist reports to the Traditional Program Director. 

Primary roles include:

Conduct Tennis Lessons

• Plan, organize, and teach tennis lessons according to the level of the participants
• Tailor lessons to meet the needs of individuals or groups
• Provide instruction in basic tennis techniques (e.g., hand-eye coordination, striking, agility, basic rules)
• Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of child development in the primary years
• Collaborate with other Tennis Specialists and the Traditional Program Director to create consistency in the program
• Ensure the safety of all campers by maintaining a vigilant presence in and around the gymnasium

Other General Camp Responsibilities

• Attend weekly staff meetings
• Participate in the life of the camp and be responsible for other duties as assigned by the Summer Camp Director
• Demonstrate flexibility and resourcefulness
• Communicate with colleagues about camper issues and needs

Requirements

They will be motivated by authentic interest in the experience of the participants in the programs.The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, disposition, and/or ability required to perform essential functions of the job:

• Prior experience in teaching or coaching tennis is preferred
• Strong understanding of tennis techniques
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to effectively teach and motivate campers
• Ability to demonstrate tennis techniques and remain active during lessons
• Experience working with children 
• Experience with safety and crisis management
• Is committed to being a creative self-starter who brings wisdom, perspective, confidence, and excellent problem-solving skills to the position
• Demonstrates excellent command of a large group of people, children and adults alike, and comfortability and confidence speaking in front of them
• Possesses excellent oral and written communication skills; speaks professionally and thoughtfully to camp families at all times
• Demonstrates an ability to work collaboratively bringing a positive attitude and sense of humor even during stressful situations
• Ensures that program participants have a safe and positive camp experience
• Assists in managing crises and unanticipated events that affect camp
• Maintains ongoing evaluation process of camp programs, staff, site and facilities and makes recommendations for improvements
• Assures that the camp philosophy and practices align with our mission and school year values

The Summer Camp Tennis Specialist is a single summer position, with the option thereafter to renew on a year-by-year basis. The individual who assumes this role should have completed a minimum of 1 year in a tennis instructor role, or at least 3 total years of teaching experience.
