Job Description - Summer Program Teacher of English as a Foreign Language

Description

Location: Pepperdine University, Malibu, CA or University of Mount St Vincent, New York, NY

Employment Period: Late June to Early August, depending on location and contract duration

Reports to: Director of Studies and ultimately Center Manager (and when doing activities reporting to the Activities Manager)

Role description

The main role of the Teacher is to provide ESL instruction to our international students. It may be that there is a double shift system where half the students have lessons on certain days and the other half have them on the opposite days, so there are a few different teacher contract options.

30 contact teaching hours per week: teachers will have 30 contact hours of teaching and will spend a 6th non-teaching day either going to the airport to assist with meet and greet/departure of students; being on site to help with arrivals and departures or general office duties; or leading in a full day excursion.

15 contact teaching hours per week: in the single shift scenario teachers are expected to teach 15 hours per week and perform a number of day time and evening activity sessions and a full-day excursion or airport transfers as well as doing some student monitoring at meal and breaktimes.

Teaching staff on both these contracts work a 6-day week

Duties and Responsibilities:

Full time role 30 hours teaching

  • To help with testing and placement of students
  • To provide 30 hours ESL instruction
  • Attendance at regular staff meetings and teacher development workshops (2 hours per week)
  • To monitor and record student attendance
  • To monitor and counsel students on academic matters
  • To ensure students receive the Kings Life, Project and Excursion lessons
  • To submit regular specified academic paperwork to Director of Studies (work records, class registers, completed reports)
  • To promote activities to students in class
  • 6th day: To lead and supervise a full-day off-site excursion or to assist with Center on-site duties or arrivals/departures on non-teaching days
  • To ensure Kings policy on child safeguarding and student welfare is followed
  • Any other duties as directed by line manager

Full time role 15 hours teaching

  • To help with testing and placement of students
  • To provide 15 hours ESL instruction
  • Attendance at regular staff meetings and teacher development workshops (2 hours per week)
  • To monitor and record student attendance
  • To monitor and counsel students on academic matters
  • To ensure students receive the Kings Life, Project and Excursion lessons
  • To submit regular specified academic paperwork to Director of Studies (work records, class registers, completed reports)
  • To promote activities to students in class
  • 6th day: To lead and supervise a full-day off-site excursion or to assist with on-site duties or arrivals/departures on non-teaching days
  • To ensure Kings policy on child safeguarding and student welfare is followed
  • Meal bedtime and student monitoring duties on a rota basis
  • To lead and supervise a wide range of daytime and evening sporting social and interest-based activities
  • Any other duties as directed by line manager

Remuneration package

  • This role pays a weekly stipend of $815 in addition to shared accommodation and full board on campus
  • Staff at Kings are paid bi-weekly
  • A bonus of $30 per week is paid to all returning teacher upon successful completion of contract

Requirements

Person Specification

Kings is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects staff and volunteers to share this commitment. All staff will be required to undergo a background check. Staff must be over the age of 21 and eligible to work in the US.


Applicants must have:

  • University degree
  • Recognised teacher training qualification (CELTA, Trinity Cert. TESOL, Primary teaching or equivalent)
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Energy, enthusiasm, and an empathy with children/teenagers
  • Ability to lead a group of students on and off campus
  • Flexibility and an ability to adapt

Desirable attributes include:

  • Teaching experience, preferably with young learners
  • Previous junior summer camp/center experience
  • Teaching/coaching experience, preferably with young learners
  • Child safeguarding/wellbeing/counseling training
  • Current first aid certificate
