Job Description - Summer Student- Stinson Lab

The Stinson Laboratory investigates fundamental mechanisms of DNA repair, with a focus on the homologous recombination (HR) pathway. Defects in HR factors, including BRCA1 and BRCA2, are key determinants of breast and ovarian cancer development and response to genotoxic treatments. Through defining the molecular mechanisms of HR, our goal is to elucidate causes of cancer and contribute to improved treatments.

We use Xenopus laevis frog egg extracts, which efficiently recapitulate DNA repair and other pathways of genome maintenance. This powerful, physiologically complex system enables biochemical and real-time single-molecule imaging approaches (Stinson et al., Molecular Cell (2020); Stinson et al., bioRxiv (2023)), which we combine with quantitative mass spectrometry and cell-based studies to dissect DNA repair mechanisms.

Located in Boston and the surrounding communities, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is a leader in life changing breakthroughs in cancer research and patient care. We are united in our mission of conquering cancer, HIV/AIDS, and related diseases. We strive to create an inclusive, diverse, and equitable environment where we provide compassionate and comprehensive care to patients of all backgrounds, and design programs to promote public health particularly among high-risk and underserved populations. We conduct groundbreaking research that advances treatment, we educate tomorrow's physician/researchers, and we work with amazing partners, including other Harvard Medical School-affiliated hospitals.

This summer intern will be a key contributor to research projects in the laboratory and conduct a variety of experiments. Training will be provided for all experimental techniques.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop in-depth understanding of DNA repair and its relation to cancer biology and stay up to date with relevant literature.
  • Work in a team environment to advance projects collaboratively.
  • Perform biochemical experiments, including gel electrophoresis, Western blots, and quantitative mass spectrometry.
  • Analyze and interpret experimental data to contribute to oral/written presentations, grant applications, and peer-reviewed publications.
  • Maintain a detailed laboratory notebook.
  • Regularly present results at weekly group meetings.

At Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, we work every day to create an innovative, caring, and inclusive environment where every patient, family, and staff member feels they belong. As relentless as we are in our mission to reduce the burden of cancer for all, we are committed to having faculty and staff who offer multifaceted experiences. Cancer knows no boundaries and when it comes to hiring the most dedicated and compassionate professionals, neither do we. If working in this kind of organization inspires you, we encourage you to apply.

Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is an equal opportunity employer and affirms the right of every qualified applicant to receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, gender identity or expression, national origin, sexual orientation, genetic information, disability, age, ancestry, military service, protected veteran status, or other characteristics protected by law.
