Surgical Technician Extern / Surgery / Full Time

The Surgical Tech Extern provides supervised support to the surgical team by assisting with the preparation, organization, and sterile management of instruments, equipment, and supplies. This role is designed to offer hands-on learning opportunities for individuals pursuing education and certification as a Surgical Technologist. The extern performs duties under direct supervision while maintaining compliance with hospital policies, aseptic standards, and regulatory requirements. Surgical Tech Extern is an onsite position.

Major Tasks, Duties and Responsibilities

• Prepare the operating room by assembling required instruments, sterile supplies, and equipment according to the planned surgical procedure.
• Establish and maintain the sterile field, ensuring proper aseptic technique and the organization of instruments and materials.
• Anticipate the needs of the surgical team during procedures by passing instruments, handling supplies, and supporting intraoperative tasks within the scope of education and hospital policy.
• Participate in required instrument, sponge, and equipment count with the certified surgical scrub and other members of the surgical team to ensure patient safety and adherence to regulatory standard.
• Support turnover and readiness of the operating room by cleaning, restocking, and appropriately managing instruments and equipment between surgical cases.
• Prepare, prevent, protect and respond to support our culture of safety.
• Works hours per week in accordance with offer letter or per attributes of position at transfer request. May be expected to work longer hours as necessary.
• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Education: Currently enrolled in an accredited Surgical Technology program and completed one (1) semester of clinicals.

License: None

Experience: None  

Certification:

• BLS within 90 days of hire
