Job Summary:

The UMLP Post-Baccalaureate Fellowship is a gap-year program for recent college graduates preparing for careers in law or medicine. Fellows gain hands-on experience at the intersection of healthcare and justice, supporting clients with health-harming legal needs while working alongside attorneys, healthcare providers, and community partners.

Job Description:

The MLP Post-Baccalaureate Fellowship is a gap-year opportunity designed for recent college graduates pursuing careers in law or medicine. Fellows work at the intersection of healthcare and justice, assisting with legal casework, conducting patient intakes, and supporting clients facing health-harming legal needs. This immersive, service-oriented role offers hands-on experience in legal advocacy and community health impact.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct Patient Intakes
  • Follow up on referrals from the healthcare system
  • Interview patients using structured intake forms and triage tools
  • Identify legal and social needs, with guidance from multi-disciplinary team
• Case Support
  • Assist attorneys and paralegals with case research, document drafting, case file management, and hearing preparation
  • Help coordinate appointments and follow-up communications with clients
• Client Engagement
  • Maintain regular contact with clients once cases are accepted
  • Serve as a liaison between the client, legal team and healthcare team.
  • Track client progress, outcomes, and support services needed
• Program Support
  • Assist with data entry, program evaluation, and reporting
  • Attend and contribute to all scheduled team meetings
  • Support educational programming or presentations for health professionals

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree completed prior to internship start date
• Strong interest in law, healthcare access, social justice, or public service
• Excellent communication, organization, and interpersonal skills
• Maturity, professionalism, and discretion when handling sensitive information
• Comfort interacting with diverse populations and individuals in crisis
• Preferred: prior experience in legal, medical, public health, or nonprofit settings
